** Star Wars Episode VII - SPOILERS WITHIN **

You have to remember that approximately 30 years have passed since ROTJ. Technology would have advanced even in the 'Star Wars' universe. Maybe the hilt that has been added to the lightsaber is part of the saber's advancement.

Sure I'll buy that, as soon as you can explain why that would be an advancement and why lightsabers hadn't changed in the 5000 odd years before that :p

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The lightsabre hilt thing is just visual, that's it.

The kids are probably loving it, we've grown up with SW so we're picking holes.

Personally I like the look but admit it has no functionality. As you've said Shami, lightsabres have remained the same for thousands of years.

Bah! Beat me! :p

One general point about the Star Wars universe I find strange the more the timelines and all the films start connecting is about the Jedi. In the Rebels cartoon and Episode 4, they regularly call the force and Jedi "ancient religion/ belief" or comments in a similar vein. Now when you look at episode 4 comparing to the end of 3 and Rebels in between only 18-20 years have passed (using Luke growing up as a timeline)

So 18-20 year ago there was a ******* huge temple on the galaxies capital and the Jedi were among the foremost protectors of the Galaxy. So evenHan Solo would have been born before the end of episode 3 and most the Imperial officers present in 4 would have too.

So how does something in your own lifetime, in only 20 year, become an ancient religion? :p

Has anyone else thought this or am I over thinking things?

According to an episode of 'Clone Wars' a lightsabre is a personal thing, you collect your own personal crystal (or it collects you) and then you, using the force, construct your own personal Lightsabre!

So maybe that bloke wanted two ickle blades coming out the hilt, thinking it was a cool idea!!!

Each to his own!! :)

I think its just the new look for the sabers. I wouldn't be surprised if they all didn't have a similar look. At least I think the more electrical look of it will also be the same in the other sabers we see in this movie.

Well jedi even in their peak were not that numerous in the greater scheme of things. A lot of people in the galaxy would never see a jedi in their lifetime so they might consider them myth. It's also an ancient religion in that it's....well ancient. As in been around for a long, long time.

I doubt it when it comes to the hilt but yeah it's very possible when it comes to the sort of overloaded appearance.

Ancient in the sense that it has existed for thousands of years, not because it was something from long ago.

Jedis always has a certain mystic about them though, although the films tend to focus on them and give them a high profile they weren't really a common sight for the 'normal' people living in the galaxy.

Technology has been fairly stagnant for centuries in the Star Wars universe, it's kinda plateaued so that there isn't really and development/progression only revision and different designs

Each to his own!! :)

That's something that's been part of the lore for a very long time, each Jedi crafts their own lightsabre, and the crystals used give the blades slightly different properties such as the colour.

Therefore the look of each blade/hilt is personal to the owner

Yeah I remember the randy stradley saying this:

As has been established by Lucasfilm, about 200 Jedi (about 2.5% of the total number) survived Order 66. So far Dark Times has killed off quite a number of the survivors -- if you count Master Mahn and the younglings who died in issue #6. A bunch more died in "Purge."

At least they can chuck in the ones we never saw die, like Quinlan Vos for example :)

Indeed, but it beats giving the only black Jedi a purple one....
Way to single out a chap.

Deluxe trailer is pretty much the crass we would have experienced from George directly, it is nice to be reminded of that.
Disney make good movies, they might be kids movies, but adults enjoy them too, hopefully star wars will be no different.

He wasn't singled out, it was his request.

Throughout the six Star Wars films, lightsabers come in three colors: red, green, and blue....save for one extra-special Jedi master. While filming the Battle of Geonosis in Attack of the Clones, Sam Jackson asked George Lucas if his weapon could be purple to make Mace Windu stand out. Purple is Jackson’s favorite color and it is often featured on his movie characters. Mitch Hennessy wore a ring with a purple gem in The Long Kiss Goodnight, Mr. Glass wore purple clothing in Unbreakable; Jackson chose to have Doyle Gipson wear a purple hat in Changing Lanes; and Lazarus, his character in Black Snake Moan, plays a purple Gibson guitar.

Ooooh yeah :p kind of makes sense now haha.

Apologies if this is a repost:

Have to say i think that sabre looked retarded, is there any real reason for 2 dinky laser blades that close to the grip? Just makes no sense looking at it.

And it seems the empire is still around in this one? Tie Fighters, storm troopers etc? Apparently they've rebuilt somehow.
Ever wondered why a sword has those sticky out bits? Its to stop you getting you hand chopped off when another sword slides down the blade. Same goes for this.
