** Star Wars Episode VII - SPOILERS WITHIN **

Yeah I have read everything in paperback and hardback but it's irrelevant now and tbh only 10% of it was ever any good. It was though all we had. Even the heralded thrawn trilogy is pretty pap writing but at the time what else was there.

This was some of my stuff I was shifting on..

I'm not interested in any of the EU now going forward that isn't canon and right now that's 1 graphic novel on Maul, the Tarkin book, one on Luke after New Hope and Lords of the Sith on Vader and the Emp. The rest can get lost, I'm not interested in it now they threw it away.

Re-qouting for relevence. It's mainly post ROTJ EU stuff that won't be cannon per se, but as Timothy Zahn, of Thrawn Trilogy fame said in an AMA

What the “non-canon” announcement by Lucasfilm Ltd. means is that they aren’t going to be bound by the Expanded Universe books, comics, and games as they plan their new movies. Realistically, that’s something they had to do—the EU is just too big, complicated, and occasionally contradictory for them to have to deal with.

However, I’m guessing that EU stories that aren’t referenced (or contradicted) by the sequel movies will still be considered sort-of alive, in the same way that most Clone Wars-era stories (like Outbound Flight) were mostly unaffected, with the exception being all of the previous material on Boba Fett’s backstory.

Alternatively, if the new movies do contradict my books in some way, I can probably come up with some hand-waving story that will explain the apparent discrepancy. If there’s one thing we authors are good at, it’s hand-waving.

So the EU stuff isn't necessarily suddenly 'it didn't happen' - and if the new one is set 40 years in the future, it leaves a relatively decent amount of time in between where EU stuff 'could' have happened (hence them calling the EU stuff 'Star Wars Legends') unless the new things directly mine/trample/contradict them.

The second the new film hits everything is "it didn't happen". It doesn't matter that the new film is 40 years approx in the future Zahn can't suddenly hand wave a change that erradicates the three solo children, Lukes wife and son and so on. Unless of course someone wakes up in a shower and all the previous books were a dream. Sure enjoy the stories for what they now are an alternative universe they may or may not use as they see fit. He can say if the new films contradict his books in some way he can hand wave it, how do you hand wave the fact that the 3 biggest players in the game Luke Han and Leia have a completely different life to the EU. How can he hand wave away Jacen, Jaina and Anakin?

I guess he's just sore that the arc he was working on for 20 years won't be used.

so if there was someone who has not watched any sw movie, ever. What would be the best way to start watching them?

My current thought process - as a 40 year old SW fan with a 3 year old boy and another on the way...

Pretend 1-3 don't exist. For now.

Watch 4-6, but keep in mind they might look a little dated if special effects are important to you.

Watch the new ones as they come out over the next few years. They should be good.

Finally, once you've watched 4-9 and have become a SW fan, watch 1-3. Treat 1-3 as a kid-friendly cartoon mini-series that explorers some of the history of the SW universe. Don't expect too much, and you'll probably find them an "OK" part of the SW story.

The things I liked about 1 - 3 was the atmosphere became a lot darker. More story towards, The Sith. Plus the difference in some of the build up to the fighting scenes.

A new spin-off announced!

Oh god don't let Disney see this and think it's a great idea!!!!!
