Linx 10.1 inch Windows 8 Tablet - Any good?

Thanks very much for that mate, just need to decide weather to take the plunge and pick one of these up! Seem to be around the £160 mark at the mo. I had looked at smaller models but thought the extra ram in the 10" would keep things running a little smoother

If it's just the ram you're worried about then I wouldn't be put off by the 1gb of ram in the smaller models, even with a fair bit of multi-tasking the linx 8 seems to cope well with lots of windows 8 apps running. Windows seems to put them into a suspended state when they're in the background and task manager reports that they use basically no ram. Also I play hearthstone frequently on mine, a game which has a minimum ram requirement of 2gb, and it runs absolutely flawlessly.

Clearly if you're planning on doing heavy multi-tasking using conventional .exe programs then this will probably pose more of an issue. Still, I've had dropbox, steam and firefox running at the same time with no problems.

Thanks for the in depth response there mate much appreciated. I was considering maybe playingn a few steam games nothing to intensive though mainly football manager.

Can you add a keyboard with these? I guess you could use a wireless USB one? Also one last thing, would you need a stylus to be able to browse around the web or is it pretty good as it is scrolling with your fingers?

Thanks again matey

No worries! :)

I don't have football manager to try but I can't imagine it's the most intensive game in the world, neither is hearthstone to be fair. I saw a video of someone playing grid 1 on low settings on youtube on one of these and I think that's probably about the limit of its capabilities. Hopefully that should give you some idea of the sort of games it can play. Personally I think that's really impressive when comparing against the sort of games an ~£100 android tablet can play.

Yeah any bluetooth or a wired micro usb keyboard should work, or presumably an OTG cable + full sized usb keyboard should be fine too. The only thing to note is that the linx 8 charges through the usb (not true of the linx 10 which has a separate port) meaning that if you plug in a device you can't charge it at the same time.

The screen doesn't have an active digitizer so you're limited to capacitive stylus's only. I haven't tried any but I doubt you'd be able to handwrite notes or anything like that. Browsing is absolutely fine without one, even in desktop mode. However, I would say it depends a lot on the browser you want to use. I found firefox to be really bad, but this is because it is poorly optimised for touch (no horizontal scrolling, pinch to zoom, text highlighting etc etc). Using IE in desktop mode is perfectly fine and in metro mode is fantastic. I haven't tried chrome but I know it has some touch optimisations, although it has particularly heavy ram usage so maybe it wouldn't be so great.

Thanks again mate, think I may be sold on one of these! For the price I think what you get seems to be pretty dam good. I do have a laptop with windows 8 but i like the idea of being able to put a nice light weight windows device in my bag while I'm away and have a fully functional windows os to hand

Thanks again for your input

No problem! I hope it's useful :)

Personally I think all linx tablets are a steal for their prices. The only minor gripes I have for the linx 8 are the screen and battery, both of which aren't bad and are probably better than the vast majority of android tablets for the same price. The battery lasts about 6 hours for reasonable use and putting it next to a hudl 2 for example the screen doesn't look quite as good which is expected because the resolution is lower.

They're really minor gripes though, all in all I love it and don't regret it. :)

Its for the 10 inch version, if you PM message me with your email I will forward on. They are in .docx format and about 5mb

It would be easier to upload documents to dropbox for people to download from it like kristmace did in Linx Tablet drivers and BIOS downloads tread uploaded Linx drivers to dropbox for anyone to download it. :)

Yeah I agreed all Linx tablets with 32GB are absolutely steal. I was in Currys to buy Linx 10 on 22 Dec but was surprised when rep told it was all gone then back home to check Currys site told it was all sold out. Few days later after Christmas Currys removed Linx 10 as well as Linx 8 32GB from products listing so they now selling only Linx 8 16GB.

Seems they are very popular indeed, I was looking at the surface pro until I saw the price! For what I would want to do on the tablet this seems like a really good deal. Just need to decide if I want a 10" or maybe the 8".

I take these are capable of Remote Desktop etc? Can they play 1080p movie files as well?

I have Dagi P702 that is transparent accurate capacitive stylus, been tried handwriting notes, drawing and browse internet. Really fantastic stylus that can do same things active digitizer do. I tested Surface Pro 3 active digitizer but was not impressive with it, it not responsive to part of screen area when tried to write notes, I found Dagi P702 more responsive than Surface Pro 3 active digitizer.

Well no, remote desktop did not worked on Windows 8.1 with Bing because some files were removed but someone developed RDP Wrapper that will enable remote desktop on Windows 8.1 with Bing. :)

Oh right I see that's a bummer! Will have a look at the link you posted so thanks for that.

Could you actually install a desktop version of windows 8 on one of these though and have a fully function rdp client? I guess other than though it's a full windows install with full functionality.

Need to find a case now for one of these :D

my tips
  • go for 10" the extra screensize and ram is better for some steam games - dont expect toplay anything intensive though
  • Rdp works fine. you just cant rdp to the tablet without modifying it. rdping from it works fine
  • screen is actually quite nice
  • much lighter than i expected
  • make sure to change to full qwerty virtual keyboard
  • the official keyboard you can buy for the 10" is crap.
  • tested bluetooth mouse and keyboard fine
  • about 20gb is free from the 32gb (do not delete recovery partition as it is wimboot)
  • not setup by default for device encryption but a bit of fiddling can get this working with no impact
  • buy a memory card
  • chrome does use a lot of ram but touch gestures r very nice e.g. swiping back to go back.
  • can play 1080p dts mkv fine without any issue

Anyone had anything back from tablettradeup? Submitted on the 18th and not had anything back other than confirmation of the request. Website just says "Received - In Progress".

Interesting :), are you able to write subscript/superscript clearly when handwriting? I ask because I do a lot of maths and it would be fantastic if I could use it to replace paper notes. How is palm rejection too?

I read somewhere that these come with a screen protector already applied, guess they were telling a porky a then :p

mine came with a screen protector of types on it.which seems to be adequate, but still looking around for a case. I did try a cheapy of eBay but it was crap and getting my money back.

Anyone know if a process like this would work

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=uk&lc=en&docname=c04487758#N58

Or any process to back up wimboot and try a restore
