Shooting at French Satirical Magazine

What I do find odd in the media is how we label him as a mass murderer & discuss mental illness.

When the perpetrator is a Muslim the nature of the dialogue changes - in reality I'd argue they are all mentally ill deranged mass murderers (those willing to kill civilians).

I wouldn't, it is lazy and incorrect to just dismiss anything along these lines as 'mental illness' not to mention adding to the general stigma surrounding mental illness.

Plenty of people carry out atrocities without being mentally ill, they tend to have a rather extreme ideology. Do you think the Nazis were all mentally ill? Chinese communists? Soviets? Plenty of Islamic terrorists are not mentally ill, are well educated and can quite easily rationalise their actions within the framework of the ideology they subscribe to.

Well these deranged murderers haven't killed any kids and as a matter of fact choose not to kill the mother and daughter that let them into the building, so it's rather disingenuous to associate these horrible killers at that level!

There are 2 confirmed dead at the supermarket, they could be women or children, we don't know yet.

It depends on if you determine functional empathy as being a requirement for a sound mind, personally I do.

I'm not saying it's the only aspect (not at all for all cases) & the point was more in reference to the difference in how the media portrays both sides - not on the underline causes of terrorism (otherwise I'd have gone into the other factors, but incorrectly I didn't think it was necessary due to the context of the post). The media in the west attributes mass murder & possible mental illness for selective cases & dismisses the label of terrorism & visa versa for others.

I don't think it was in direct relation to this, more in regard to the attack at the school.

You seem to always be looking to pretend to be smarter than everyone else.....

yeah sky news reporting an incident, and showed pictures of police with assault rifles drawn... somewhere near the trocadero

The gunmen have empathy for muslims elsewhere in the world, but not for the cartoonists. I have empathy for the victims and hostages, but none for the gunmen. It's not mental illness it's human nature.

somewhere very close to the Eiffel Tower, a place known for tourism. Nothing comfirmed yet, might not be anything, but certainly something is happening there.

Exactly - sadly, in their minds it's no different to our soldiers over in Iraq/Afghanistan etc. going to fight for their country/beliefs. Would you say all of our armed forces are mentally ill?
