Shooting at French Satirical Magazine

My eldest lad (23) and his girlfriend went to Paris on the day of the Charlie Hebdo incident. I had just seen it on the news at about 11.30 am....he was setting off at 12.30pm. He wasn't getting to Paris until the following day though, due to taking the coach.

They are still there at the moment though, although we have heard from him, so thats good news. They had to go to sort out a visa for his girlfriend who is going to work in Madagascar for 6 months and thats the nearest Madagascaran (sp?) embassy.

Can't wait till he comes back on Sunday in all honesty, he may be 23 but it doesn't stop the worry.

Well if the shoe fits

The shoe certainly does fit the idea that people wanting power will do anything they can to get it, especially if they can use religion to persuade followers to join their cause. Doesn't matter what the religion or cause is...

I wonder how much public pressure the French government will get relating to Algerian immigration at the end of all this

Again, you are missing my point.

I was referring to the imbalance in media labelling regarding the cultural origins of the perpetrator in question, I obviously didn't make it clear enough in the first post, I don't think anybody who is a terrorist is mentally ill from medical perspective. I was speaking in the language of the media at the time to make a point (which you've apparently missed).

You later tried to argue that point with another re: lack of empathy so make your mind up.

voices in his head

Yep, the voices are telling me there are 10 females:
Sophie;
Andrea;
Zari;
Louna (daughter of Sarah below);
Sarah;
Sandrine;
Sandy;
Noemie;
Esther; and
Dominique.(daughter of Sarah above)

The 7 males are:
Jean Luc;
Samuel Isaac (daughter of Sarah above);
Mordechai;
Norbert;
Yossef;
Shmuel (son of Sarah above); and
Yohan.

The voices don't think you need to know their surnames or addresses either.

As I said, not official but I would think reliable.

what?

You can and you can also justify mass killings within the right framework. The mental illness label for anyone who conducts a mass killing is lazy and naive.

Can you be a meat eater and still have empathy? If you follow an ideology where some people are less than you/sub human. Whether Nazi, Islamist... it is perfectly possible to massacre whithin that framework while not having any less empathy in general than say someone working in a butchers.

Not necessarily... if someone is mentally ill then it is quite correct to report that. You'll also find reports about concerns of the rise in extreme right wing views in Europe.

You can justify anything using the right framework. And though I agree it's possible to have empathy towards some and not others, that in itself as far as I'm concerned is a manifestation of a kind of mental illness, be that illness personal or, like the Nazis, a facet of mass hysteria.

It's not naive or lazy to think people are crazy. Everyone is to a degree.

Bob next door told me there's 50 Gurkhas in there too. Apparantly he knows them from ww1 which is weird as he's only 20.

I think all of us when querying your sources wanted to know if your source was likely to have knowledge, we expected a simple proof they know what they're talking about not some attempt at being a smartass as justification.

These terrorists are really going to denigrate the lives of Muslims living in France. If that estate they lived on had a bad reputation before I can't imagine living there now.

Yep, the effect on the thousands and thousands of normal Muslims in France is going to be profound and prolonged :(
They are already being violently attacked in France because of this :mad:

Apologies for being a smart arse. As I mentioned, I believe my source(s) to be reliable.

Yeah,it's just that one religion does this on an entirely different scale than all the others.
The usual 'this has nothing to do with Islam' rubbish.

Eh? The point that you are, oh so cleverly, making has exactly what to do with what's going on right now?

It doesn't... some people just seem to go into apologist mode at the hint of any criticism of Islam... we get the usual it's politics not religion or pointing out that some other people who aren't Muslims have also done some bad things.

If this was say a thread about North Koreans commuting some violent act it would more likely stay on topic.
