Anandtechs look at DX 12 in action with star swarm.

Wasn't the star swam demo also listed as being inaccurate? Meaning the results was never the same because how it loads batches up or something..

Star Swarm is a best case scenario and designed to be a best case scenario; it isn’t so much a measure of real world performance as it is technological potential.

We will need to see it in action in game or 3dmark or something.

I seem to remember the idea was Star Swarm loaded up as many ships/items as it thought the hardware could take (i.e. the more powerful the hardware the harder the test got too, so it was inconsistent).

But I'm not sure if that was ever definitively agreed/proved by the Developers?

I think the article said as much but opted to use a certain test in it that was predictable and more accurate for benching.

Wonder if we'll see a round of old-ish games getting 'Remastered' into DX12, much like we see HD remasters of old games at the moment.

I think it will be the 390X that'll be 8GB (and that it'll come much laster) from what I've read.

As far as I gather, the first implementation of HBM is limited to 4GB, so the AMD card that's coming soon should be 4GB tops (just very fast 4GB), so I assume it'll be called the 380X

Yer, time will tell on both but please be 8GB and I am sold. Plus some DX12 for older games please and I am a happy chappy :D

Yep, it is inaccurate and I wouldn't read too much into it as of yet. I could get D3D running much better with a simple number tweak in the cfg file and my GPUs went from 40% usage to 80% usage. Same batches etc.

Still, it does look very good for nVidia looking at that chart, wouldn't you agree?

Is that surprising though given the 980 is a DX12 card, whereas everything else is older? Surely that's bound to skew these results slightly. 3xx could come along and blow it away. Maybe.

Worth noting that the 980 is NVIDIA's latest generation GPU, whereas the 290x is one generation older. Though I'm also surprised the 980 is 50% faster, wouldn't have thought it would be more than 20-30%.

If that's a valid excuse then why is 290X still being recommended to new buyers?

It's a shame they did not include the GTX970 considering all of the hysteria surrounding it atm and the number of people rushing to trade it in for a "older generation" card.

I read the article quite thorough and the 290X is also a DX12 card, as is many others, so it isn't because of that. The 4/5 series from nVidia isn't supported but the 6/7/9 series is and the only buggy version is the 7 series for AMD.

I honestly have no idea why the 980 is so far ahead but it sticks out like a sore thumb.

looking at the dx11 results AMD cards hate that test lol

I believe its not AMD exactly (complicated story involving driver command lists) but the inefficiencies of DX11 - nVidia wrote some hacks in their driver that over-ride normal DX11 functionality at driver level but I don't believe AMD has to the same extent.

Proves what i have been saying though, forget the Nvidia vs Amd thing for the moment and just look at the diff between DX11 and DX12, even if the graphs were cherry picked to favour Nvidia (who knows?) or even if Nvidia worked alongside Microsoft to deliver a driver to run in harmony with DX12, no one but the people involved will know, but the facts are there for everyone to see, DX12 is far superior to DX11.

Again thank Mantle for that, if think if you look at the performance increases in terms of percentages rather than raw numbers you will see actually the Mantle vs DX11 results are better than the 980 DX12 vs DX11 results.

While the 980 is just faster overall in DX11 and DX12 and Mantle is still lagging behind FPS wise, the actual percentile increase is better.

Neverless, the 980 result is amazing, im seriously thinking that the next Nvidia cards are going to be the special cards and tbh AMD are still going to be playing catch up, they make take the crown back shortly with the 3xx series, but i think once again Nvidia are going to deliver the best performing gpu again, albeit the most expensive.

But with that said i still hope AMD can pull off something half decent atleast that pound performance is arguably the better card :)

See, I have seen that said a few times now about DX12 is here because of Mantle and I just don't agree. I don't care either way in reality and I am glad we have something that works close to the metal. I look at games like Tomb Raider and all 3 Titans run at 99% and I look at games like Hitman Absolution and all 3 GPUs run at 60%.... Bad coding or the API limitations? I just hope devs cater for us PC gamers and start to use it.

Respect to Microsoft and with us Windows 8.1 and 7 users being able to upgrade for free, I will be straight on it.

This I am particularly happy about.

Although I don't think they've released exact details about that yet.

i.e. Do we get a free windows 10 key and iso file (or just make an iso file once it's installed), or is it just an upgrade off our current install with no windows 10 key.

If it's the latter then you couldn't re-install windows 10 for free after the upgrade period.

Ah they will tie your license to your login I'm guessing. I recently reinstalled 8.1 on a clean disk and once I entered my login info during install it never asked me for my key.

Checked system info tab to see if it was running 30 day demo mode but nope was fully keyed up

guess we just need to wait for the release of the nvidia and amd drivers now to really test.

nvidia 349.56
AMD 15.200

can't find any leaked ones yet :(

Was DX cancelled?

Circa January 2013, Email sent out to MS MVP's contained:

DirectX is no longer evolving as a technology.

It went public and MS backtracked, simple as that.

How could that MVP email been so, so wrong about Microsoft's future DirectX commitments? The spokesperson said "it was a mistake, pure and simple."

Nvidia must have employed that guy to release hardware specs.:p

Yer, because AMD never get things wrong and have to issue retractions do they.... I seriously don't care though and just pleased that finally an open standard API is here for all DX12 capable cards to use.
