Is the gfx divide between the PS4 and XO narrowing?

I was having a good chat with a mate who is a game developer over the weekend and he was saying that the biggest issue they are facing is not really GPU grunt it's actually the weak CPU's holding them back more and causing more development issues.

I have both and regularly play on them both and tbh I see no great difference each has some great games.

Personally I would ignore any comments about power and go with whichever has the games you like and which most your friends have.

Didnt ea say the same thing about assassins creed? In that the amount of AI in each level had to be gimped because the CPU couldnt handle it.

I have to say when I first got my ps4 it was really loud at times but after first few months the fans never seem to ramp up anymore.

I wonder if firmware updates have improved something, I have not heard my fans ramp up for ages (not that they really did). I played AC4 for nearly 5 hours straight the other day and the console was silent as can be.

Unity runs better on XO and I beleive it is due to the better CPU in the XO over PS4.

it also runs pretty bad on a decent PC so poor coding could also be an issue. The CPU's in the consoles are not much better than modern tablet CPU's and lack the grunt needed for heavy AI and Physics calculations games are trying to push.

It's already been seen in the lack of Enviromental interaction between the Player and the world. The games look stunning but to me (GTA V aside) generally feel a bit like you are playing on a pre rendered backdrop rather than a detailed interactive world.

I don't think graphics is what makes a game to me the interaction with the game and the game making you feel like you are part of the world the game is in. GTA V does a fantastic job of this.....

Thought of the day: The divide between the consoles may lessen, but the divide between the fanboys only gets wider.

I'm looking to buy one of these consoles in the coming months for the arrival of Witcher 3 (I know PC would be best but I'll stick with console for convenience).

Onto the question of gfx, am I likely to notice much gain on the PS4??

Depends. In general? Yes. Specific to the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (CD Projekt RED, 2015) I do not know.

I know as developers get more time with the hardware results improve, meaning the XO shouldn't be that far behind.

Sorry, but this is not how it works. While developers get more from the Xbox One if we apply the same logic to the PlayStation 4 it means that developers will get more from that.

There will always be a performance gap, if anything it will increase.

Is there anything that should sway me more to one than the other, e.g. noise?

I have not noticed either to be 'loud', considering the majority of the time they are on I am playing a game :).

Personal choice comes in to it in regards to what games you enjoy playing, but I find the exclusives better on PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 4 is more powerful (increased performance), better value for money, and better exclusive titles (in my humble opinion).

The main crux as to why you buy a console should not be over controllers, power, money but should hinge on the exclusives for that console.

You will get used to the controllers, you will earn more money and games do not look/perform terribly on any of the 'new generation'. Look at the exclusive developers and titles and decide on that.

I would still advise you get a PlayStation 4 if you have made up your mind about not getting it on PC :).

Decide on exclusives, no one can really tell you which.
PS4 is louder
Xbox won't look as great/run as great (laggy OS)

If you have friends, always get the one they have imo.

Bought an XBone because of the games I wanted... Halo, Forza, Titanfall etc.

No doubt the hardware on the PS4 is more powerful and I'll end up with one at some point, but it just doesn't grab me right now.

Sitting playing the XBone on the big telly, I find it hard to say it looks vastly different/better to last gen, mainly because I spend my time playing the games instead of fapping about pixel counts... fun is what matters and that's what I'm having.

Its a good job one of the consoles has the foresight to have beefed up GPU compute and full Huma compatibility then if that is what you are after! I do think that PS4's compute will end up being the biggest difference between the two machine when all said and done. The CPU and GPU being able to work on the same data set at the same time should throw up some interesting stuff. Hopefully games start to show up that use this soon enough.

Fun and graphics are not mutually exclusive, I had fun on my Gameboy back in the day.

Forza 6, Crackdown 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Quantum Break, Halo 5, Funk of the Titans, IDARB, Screamride, Inside, Scalebound, Ori and the blind forest, Fable legends, Neverwinter, Plus there will be quite a few indie titles and maybe some I've missed.

Yup, MS definitely blew their wad early, something they tend to do.
