Horner sort of has a point. In most other series with restricted development there is some sort of balance of performance measure.
Engine development is too open at the moment (they could change about 50% of the engine from a choice of about 90% of the total over the winter) but as time goes on they might need to do something if there's still a big gap in 2017 or something.
But its not engine. The car in 3rd was a Ferrari and the Saubers were strong. Its more that the Mercedes chassis is good too. I'd expect Hamilton to have still win with a Renault lump in his car.

Sorry, not amazed. The other one...what is it.....totally unsurprised and frankly quite bored. That's it. Don't know how I could have confused those.
RB have been found out. Now that the RuleBox™ is tighter than ever and they have fewer grey areas to push they've fallen back. Renault have apparently not developed their engine into a world beater just yet, putting them further behind the eight ball. Vettel obviously saw which way things were going and got out.
I really hope Vettel can sneak a win or two this year, Germans winning in Ferraris is always good for winding up F1 fandumb
I've had this feeling a few times in last week seasons. I don't really enjoy the event anymore and that's my issue. If I have no ulterior motive I don't really watch it.
Motive being my team to win or a bit of money on the result
I think people need to remember that this was the first race of the season - teams are still getting a handle on their cars, got some rookies in the field, and it's Melbourne - scenic track, but hardly the home of close racing and excitement.
If the show is crap after five races, then we can call the rulebook a failure!

I think it would be silly to rule out a Vettel win at some point this year, even if it is due to the Mercs tripping over each other or some form or reliability issues creeping up.I really hope Vettel can sneak a win or two this year, Germans winning in Ferraris is always good for winding up F1 fandumb
As much as i love seeing Merc win, and i'm sure its a foregone conclusion that unless there is a massive unforeseen upset they will comfortably breeze to another constructors and drivers championship, i'm really hoping Ferrari can at least start to nip at there heals at some point this season, they clearly have a strong package and have made a huge jump from last year, I hope they can continue to develop it.
I'd love to know how much they have in hand. If I ran the team I'd want to hide that as much as possible to stop the FIA coming up with some knee jerk pap to try to take that away. Only reliabilty and accidents will stop them clean sweeping this year I'm sure.

I'm guessing Davidson, Pic, Chandok etc weren't available. Palmer is relatively media friendly and a current test driver with a few days full running in an F1 car under his wheels from Abu Dhabi last year and Barcelona so he's not a bad choice.
GP2 don't do Melbourne and some of the other flyaways, but he's got 4 years experience of most of the Calendar from GP2 ... if Sky choose to use his services again.
That said I've not heard him in action. His old man wasn't that bad for the beeb in the early 90s, just nowhere near as good as James Hunt.
The first race is always hit or miss but the gap is just crazy and it's not going to get any closer soon. There was nothing interesting to watch in the entire race after the first lap and when you have cars from position 6 being lapped that is a good sign of how uneven things are.
I can't take anything away from Mercedes as they've made the best car out there by a mile, but as spectator sport that is not good for the people watching.
The gap isn't Mercedes engines over the rest though, its just the Mercedes team. If the top 8 cars were all Mercedes powered and a lap up then maybe Horner would have a point.

Please tell us oh armchair expert what configuration the engine is running in to develop the reduced power?
McLaren have told us the engine is running on reduced power.
How will K-Mag's blown engine effect they number alonso is allowed for the rest of the season? are they allocated by car or driver?
Gutted that Button finished just outside the points but at least it finished. Absolutely awful car. Oh well, maybe they'll have a good battle with Manor this season.

Really can't stand the guy. RB were arrogant little so and so's when they were winning. Stop complaining, arrange to get a mercedes engine and build a decent car - problem solved. I would much rather see mercedes and Ferrari up there than RB.

I would be managing the gap for another reason, 5 races per engine. No need to have more than a long Pittstop back to third. Conserve those engines.
Sorry to clarify I meant engine as in the complete power unit. It's not just an internal combustion engine like the V8 era.
So the question still is ... how?
Is it the ICE? Reduced boost? Conservative mapping?
MGU-K and/or MGU-H disabled?
That said ... the amount of shrapnel that came out of the back of Magnussen's car wasn't a good sign. Something properly failed in that ICE.

Haven't seen so much dross in a long time. Even when Schumacher was dominating it was still fun to watch. I am afraid F1 is going to go the same way as WRC if they keep up like this.
