Yeah, the other thing is that normally if you're in a bunch you're pointing or shouting out hazards all the time. If i'm out on my own, i won't do that obviously. So if someone's decided to sit on my wheel and i don't know they're there, then i might swerve suddenly to avoid potholes without any indication etc in a way that i would never do in a bunch.

It's just knowing and trusting the folk you're riding with. You get a feel for how much experience different people have, or if they have a habit of dropping back a bit rather than sitting close to the wheel in front or being a bit erratic etc. And i think as well that it can catch people out a bit when you get a bit of contact in the bunch and not to panic and start wobbling about. It wasn't until i started doing a lot of group riding that i realised how often you end up so close that you're rubbing shoulders, or even bumping handlebars a little sometimes. Or it's quite common to get a hand on your back or shoulder just so someone can let you know they're there if they are passing on the inside or moving position when the bunch has got a bit cramped. It definitely takes a little while to be comfortable with all that stuff going on and stay concentrated on the road and your surroundings.

Yeah. I tend to be more of the "get off my damn wheel" mentality for the reasons above.

Quite a fun ride back to work at lunch time. My cadence sensor was playing up so I think I must have been in a higher gear than normal - legs hurt a bit but I was a lot faster.

However, ParcelForce *still* don't seem to have put my frame out for delivery. I've no idea why they're being so crap. I paid the customs charges on Friday :/

edit: Apparently they didn't record that the charges were paid, sigh. It should be with me tomorrow.

I get guys like that..annoying as hell! :) had a guy sit behind me for 4 miles yyesterday but he knew what he was doing! Wasn't sitting right behind me, moved to my right and that was perfect in case of any unexpected braking.. :) my brother on the other hand rides inches away from my rear all the time and he has crashed a few times already.. Never learns tho.

Slightly to the right so that you can't see anything other than him when you look over your shoulder?

Yeah, I love it when folks do that to me in busy London traffic......

So... Some guy drafted me for part of the ride in this morning. They of course didn't say a word of thanks.

Kind of amusing though - they show up as having ridden with me and you can see all the PRs over the section where they drafted.

some guy drafted my rear wheel about 2 inches behind me the very first week I bought a bike and started riding again.
I was honestly to terrified to stop pedalling
can't say it was a pleasant experience but it's not happened in the two years since.

well you'd think and I would agree but after looking over my shoulder a few times yesterday I had no problems with it.. maybe because it was over a less busy part of my commute :o

Ok maybe I was wrong in my assumptions! But like mentioned I've hardly any group experience! ;)

Tart: why do you not have this segment KOM?, you're not far off it, did you create it? ;) :p

Lol, sadly not :p

There are a lot of lights between those two sections so it's really down to riding it regularly and getting lucky I guess - like most (non-hill, at least) KOMs ;)

Front chainrings/cassette combos....

I'm weighing up what to buy for the new bike. I was planning to go 50/34 + 11-28 on the new bike but I've come to realise that I'm quite enjoying the 46/34 + 11-28 combo that I have right now.

Looking at this gearing calculator I'm thinking that a nice combo might be 50/34 + 12-25. Has anyone ridden similar? It looks like it'll give me a similar range but tighter gearing around the sort of speeds I more regularly ride at (20-25mph). Any thoughts?

I'm riding 50/34 on a 12/30 so put 13/29 (closest I can get on the calc?) in next to your 50/34 on 11/28 and it has a much tighter spread 20-25. Obviously quite a sacrifice top end though... Although I'm not sure with the 11 speed how much of a trade off that is? Really does illustrate how ineffective I've found the top of my cassette when on little ring though (and only using it on hills/high winds) ;)

Cycling apps on smartphone: Anyone seen these;
  • page 2 'Fill That Hole' for reporting potholes, location and even log a picture of it;
  • page 6 'Cycle Streets' for street cyclepath navigation;
  • page 9 'Wahoo Fitness' listed as working with ANT+ devices (S&C etc), replacement for IpBike?

I would get the 11-25 if not just to give you that bit more oomph at higher speeds. If I was speccing up new combos I'd go semi compact and 11-28 for the range and nice spread of ratios.

52/36 at the front like a proper man. Grrrraawwww.

Proper man?

I think you mean a 58T like Tony Martin...

Depends how much you feel you need or don't need 34*28 for the hills. I'd always rather have it than just a 25, but maybe I ride more manly hills than you :p

Decisions, decisions, what colour to get my old TDF powder coated. I've got a colour chart (which is a photo of a bunch of bits of coated metal screwed to a board :p) so I'm trying to choose from that...

I'm thinking a bright green or red...

go gun metal with some bright colour bits.. like headset, seat post etc..

Pft Von :p

Hmm... 52/36 could be an option. I guess a few things about my riding might help people mock me..I mean.. advise:

1) I'm a wuss on descents and tend to feel like 35mph is really damn fast going down a hill.

2) At the mo my cadence tends to feel most comfortable about the 95-105 mark.

3) I do find hills painful and use the 34/28 combo a fair bit at the moment but that may change in the next few months as I step up my low-cadence high-power turbo work and hill training.

September of last year (I was somewhat less fit then) I *did* have to get off and push when climbing up Hardknott though that was my second day of tons of climbing in the lakes so... maybe I have an excuse.

My bright green Cotic-X used to get lots of comments.

I'll leave it to you to imagine the ratio of good to bad ones.
