Airbus A320 Crashes in Alps

Can you imagine the costs involved with a plane accident? The cost of replacing the plane, search and rescue, compensation for the families etc. A staggering amount no doubt.

Now given that we all now know how the door entry systems work in the airbus planes, why would he be banging on the door when we know he would have had the code to get in? Surely the leaked report would have said, other pilot tried re-entry code, and was denied access?

According to:
Geoffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief and managing director of airlineratings.com, said the cockpit door has three positions -- locked, normal and unlocked. Locking the door prevents a pilot from using a keypad and emergency code to get in.

It would be good if we could get confirmation on that.

If the pilot did it to commit suicide, then all I can think of is 'what an absolute *******!'

Not sure I would buy the 'muslim terrorist' angle, don't they usually start shouting about allah when they are about to kill everybody? That would be pretty clear on the tape.

I think it's a case of facts. On the voice recording you can hear the pilot banging on the door demanding to be let in.

I don't think they have analysed the actual data, only the voice recordings. So it still could be door malfunction or pilot denying access to cockpit.

Plus even if they do know it's pilot suicide, these things are dealt with quite strictly, and it will take time before they released something like this.
But the voice recording would also show if the code had been used to gain access as we know from the video that an audible sound is played to the cockpit when someone is trying to gain access via the re-entry key.

I know virtually nothing about the saftey mechanisms re entrance to the aircrafts cockpit but people are saying the pilot can reject an entry request? (once a code is put in?)

So how does that work? Code gets entered and then pilot either accepts it or rejects it?

What if there is no reponse? (e.g. unconcious pilot). DOes it open automatically then?

If you scroll up about 20 posts from yours, there is a video that explains how the lock mechanism works...

I'd hardly class a plane that can carry 150 people small :p
O.K it's not one of these new double decker super planes but it's hardly small.

So do these 'medium' sized planes normally have flight engineers then? Does anyone know?

It's the smallest plane we make.

Medium would be a 330.

And no there hasn't been flight engineers on air buses for decades.

Marseille prosecutor just said that there's no way to override the cockpit door, so presumably if it's locked from the inside - there's no way of getting in unless you physically break it down.

So the door was locked, and the plane went into what looks like an emergency descent, whilst ignoring messages from traffic control - asking why he was descending.. and apparently they could hear the pilot breathing normally the whole time.

Very weird...

Looks like you've ignored the rest of the posts in this topic :p access can be had with an emergency code from the outside in the case of a pilot incapacitation. However, this emergency code can be overridden by a conscious pilot in the flight deck.

The Internets exploded saying it's pilot suicide. If this is true then it will be interesting to see how bias our news media is.
Will the pilot be 'A Terrorist' pilot aka Muslim, or just a 'Suicidal' pilot aka non Muslim.
.... Watch this space

Well that depends if the pilot was Muslim or not.

According to a BBC flash I just got it was the Co-pilot controlling the plane.. the main pilot was banging on the door.. not sure if this has been confirmed or not.

Which could be the correct thing to do under certain circumstances.

Unfortunately until investigators have a better idea of all the events we'll not know if he was trying to save everybody on the aircraft or kill them.

Indeed, but that won't stop news agencies from spouting speculation to spin a 'good' (read: bad) story.

I have the press confrence on atm sounds like they think the co-pilot brung the plan down by him self while the pilot was branging on the door
