I had SLI MSI 970s and the top card hardly hit above 75deg.

The top KFA 980 is 20deg hotter than bottom and the fans are making a clicking type sound when fans go above 70 %.

My case is a Zalman Z11 plus.

Case seems a little cheap for that kind of hardware.

Maybe get something with a large side fan to push cool air between the cards.

Can you upload a photo or tell us how close the spacing is between the two?

A side fan as mentioned might help as can placing a fan directly behind the cards. Also remove the remaining pci slot covers on the case. Id also suggest using a custom fan profile.

Temps are not normal they should hover around 82 c for top card unless temp limit allowed to climb to 90c, I have two soc 980s in an air 540 in SLI. I had a clicking sounds , turned out to be the cheap card they stuck on the fans becoming loose and clicking on the hs , both me and my friend with the same card had this issue , re glued or remove and is fine , these coolers are very quiet and spin at a Low rpm , so a custom profile may be in order . there not great coolers , however they overclock like beasts if you can tame the heat , both of mine will do 1600 + and 8000+ on vram

Got a custom profile to kick in early on and even at 100% it was hitting 90+. Ill take photo when i get home.

I have got temp limit at max...should i reduce down? Will this cause throttling?

Having owned and returned the SOC, it runs hot hot hot. The stock fans are pants. Assuming you have the SOC variant.

I have 2 980 socs in a phantom case. The top hits 82 degrees atm and gpu 2 is about 69. I have cable tided a 120 hps fan infornt of the cards and have a 120 hps in pull behind the cards.

They hate been in sli . If you oc them they really hate sli! All I can say is make sure you have the max air flow for your case and run the fans at 90 when gaming.

Also check the Galaxy sticker ain't dropped of 1 of the fans . Mine melted of after a few weeks . I thought a cable had come lose and was stuck in the fan !

If i run them under load and without an o/c the top sits at 83ish and bottom around 75deg. When overclocked is when the top hits 90+......

I think ill have to run them unclocked until i sort a better case. Theres a good gap between the cards but obviously poor cooling from the fans/ case.

My case has 2 availble spots for 140mm fans ...one at the top, another on the underside. Will i see much of an improvement ?

Is there any thing else i could do without changing cases?

This is the routine I run with SLI/CFX.

a) Swap cards (the bottom card might be better in the top slot)
b) switch sidefan direction and/or create better positive pressure with other fans.
c) put a fan on the side of the HDD bay blowing over cards
d) replace GPU thermal paste with something like mx-4

(last resort measures below)
e) undervolt and underclock
f) place a big normal fan blowing full speed at the cards :) (used this one when mining with a custom open case)

Cheers thanks....

How do you change the fans direction?? Turn em around?

If you can, I fitted the NZXT G10 to my SOC and dropped from 77c to 36c under full load.

If you have space you could sli them too, which it what i plan on doing.

Does this require an existing water cooled system?

No, you just need to buy the G10 Kraken and a all in one water cooling system (like the corsair h110) which i what i use. You can use single radiator one's too if you don't have space for the duel.
