How're Nintendo doing financially?

Nintendo didn't build a reputation with their hardware, they built it with Donkey Kong and Mario, which started out in the arcades and Game and Watch.
The only way to play their franchises, is on their own hardware. And THAT is how Nintendo turn such a huge profit.
They don't need to compete directly, when they annihilate the competition indirectly.

Nail on the head. How so many people do not understand this basic concept I do not know. People then start clutching at straws and throwing sales figures out there but big sales figures do not equate to massive profits.

Annihilate is a strong word.

Semantics. The games that made Nintendo the household name they are were on these consoles. Eclipsing game and watch and arcade sales and then some. Of course, Gameboy sales were massive too. Now they're living off this reputation. The problem is Nintendo fans are dwindling. Kids these days are growing up not having played popular Nintendo franchises. They want Xboxes and Playstations. Give it a generation or so and the remaining Nintendo fans will be in their 50s and 60s. Nintendo need young kids growing up with Zelda and Metroid and Mario like we did and for that to happen they need to get their consoles under tvs. Or go software only.

Very good point above and very similar to a previous post I'd written on this. They are not a front runner on the console front so eventually those riding the waves from the NES/SNES era will dwindle and change is needed before then.
I really believe they could benefit by going software only. I'd have enjoyed Mario 3D World and Kart 8 on PS4 just as much.

If 50m+ 3DS' sold is considered a dwindling fan base then I'm not sure what's considered a thriving one. Sure the Wii U isn't selling well, but their Amiibos, 3DS', limited editions and most likely their mobile games are flying off the shelves. One poor product doesn't make them a poorly run company. If they release a good console next gen then they'll be right back in it. There's a reason Mario, Zelda etc have lasted this long.

That's fine if you can continue making a profit. Nintendo home console sales are dropping though. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo went handheld only - maybe with some kind of docking station to use with pads and a tv. Either way - what we have now in the WiiU is a far cry from what we had with previous Nintendo consoles (not knocking it - the games and variety just aren't there). I just want the glory days back.

So who do you think is buying and playing on the 3ds and wii u? And with mobile games coming I can see nintendo raking it in. Not to mention amiibo sales.

Sales are still growing and there are still some big games out there to come. It's not a single home console market anymore, most people have two consoles, not like the 90s where you had a SNES or Sega, n64 or ps

They're profit making - and they've been making a profit on the Wii U for quite some time too. There's nothing to see here in terms of profits - they are profitable on all lines of hardware, they can't even make Amiibo's fast enough.

Getting astray of the topic but fwiw I agree with you on the HH plus Dock - I think it's the answer - it's hitting two birds with one stone!

New 3DS XL outsold PS4/Xbone the last couple of months I believe which is fairly impressive.

They lost their way with the WiiU, that much is true. They misread the market and tried to ride the Wii wave, it was mis-marketed, woefully under advertised and with a confusing name which meant some people didn't understand if it was a new console or an expensive add-on for the Wii. It's a shame really as it is a good console and at a competitive price, it just didn't know exactly what it was trying to be at launch.

They need to take a different tack with the NX. The success of the Wii was a one-off and the WiiU, while a decent machine with some good games, is pretty much another GameCube. Nintendo need to stop relying on the reputation they built with the nes, snes and N64 and produce another console equally as worthy - which means competing with Sony and MS head-on and making games for gamers again.

I see say the Wii was a one off. As were the NES, SNES, GameBoy, Gameboy Advance, DS and 3DS.

Everything else tanked!

Indeed they did the Wii U no justice at all at launch - they practically hung it out to dry with **** poor marketing and no games - couldn't agree more.

Shockingly half arsed.

They are the 30+ something who hold onto the nostalgia of what Nintendo was.

People buying Amiibo are those sad fanboy individuals as well who keep them in packaging on display in their mums basement (yes that's an extreme thing to say) but it's those same people from my first sentence who buy amiibo.

The people who cannot see this are those same people who are blinded by the brilliance of Nintendo from yesteryear.

That's great making a profit, but people have to buy the Wii U for them to make a profit. ;)

I fully expect to get ripped to shreds though, as Nintendo are above any criticism.

Except Nintendo still make quality games so nostalgia or not it has no bearing on that.

People have been riding the Nintendo is doomed train for years, must be a very very long journey.

What does that even mean

Nintendo is a healthy business...they don't need to get into a box-shifting fight with Sony and Microsoft....they have other markets more or less to themselves, and more than enough brand power to continue being a successful business for years to come.

What I meant was assuming the Wii-U cost £100 to make and they sell at £120 then each one sold would make them a profit, but they still have to sell it in the first place to get that profit.

Was a jab at them not actually selling many consoles.

Better to suffer low sales than crash the price to sell 3x the amount of units at a $25 loss each unit and ultimately end up worse off.
