Thought I would give you people an Update

Been to see the Chiropractor twice now, and my back feels so much better

so I should be back on the bike soon !

That's good news there especially as the weather is improving. I find going out on the bike helps my back so I hope you find the same!

I did a sportive the other week with my auntie and uncle, just a short 46km ride but that is a good distance for my auntie. Today my uncle and I decided to do majority of the route again (just missing out busy Derby centre) to see what I could have done if I didn't go easy. Dead chuffed with the result, average speed of 28.5km/h over 46km. I know it is a pretty flat route but to be honest I haven't ever had such a high average speed over that distance. Nice to know I am quicker than I ever was before my accident as at times I felt I would never get anywhere near to my old pace.

Just been out to get some bits and do a whopping 10 miles barely breaking 10mph all the way. Horrible feeling, really hope I feel better soon.

Hope you feel better soon fella! Don't push yourself to recover, it takes time!

So what will happen if I put some water repellent on my Virb lens? Any side effects apart from gaining the ability to see videos clearly when it is slightly moist?

It should work, you can get replacement lenses I think anyway? (if it screws it up)

Great average over that distance, the segment PR's talk for themselves! Well done!

^Wife came 3rd in the handicap with a time of 27:46. Conditions were absolutely crap, I was a minute down on my best despite being as fit or fitter as when I set my PB, so a great effort for only her second 10. :D Elite women did long 22s which again is about a minute down on the fastest ladies times I've seen on J2/1.

It's a bit windy here today too, still the sun is out but I don't think as warm as yesterday! Still, can't complain. Both days have been better than they forecast!

Well done to your mrs in only her second TT! She'll be well away now after a confidence boost like that! :D

Day today of chores, although my legs feel fine after yesterday. After the sportive we visited my sister (north Birmingham) so along with the 3.5 hours in the saddle yesterday I did 2 dog walks (~2 miles) and 5 hours of driving. Really expected to be suffering more today so basic bike service (change chain rings as still got a click) and back to commuting tomorrow!

No big club/group rides for me the next 2 weekends as busy (& the mrs off work) but am going to try and get out with some guys after work again a couple of times. Will probably get a lunchtime solo ride or two under my belt too whenever possible. Busy 'social' life getting in the way of riding, whatever next!:cool::rolleyes:;)

3:14 to complete todays Loch Ness Etape which was 106km and stated 900m climbing but looking on Strava it's ranging from 1000m to 1400m, all over the place! No idea what place I came yet but there was 3000 people doing it apparently.

Bit of a rough day, kept finding myself in no mans land and when in groups nobody was willing to work, or when they did they would hammer the pace down too much and hold everyone up. So I worked a lot today, would have been happier having more breathers in good groups but wasn't to be.

Got a nice group of 4 of us for the last 20 miles, really nice guys. We had 6 lovely fella's who sat on us and let us 4 rotate and never done a bit of work. So I put in a surge going to the last hill and split the group massively breaking us 4 guys away and we all finished well. The other 6 although selfish and annoying, are clever dudes, can't blame them haha.

Well poop. Was fitting my new Garmin mount and was checking over the bike as well, would appear my last bone-rattler downhill has snapped 3 spokes on the read wheel :( Probably less than 500 miles on the bike feels a little early to be breaking a wheel as I only got the bike back in September/October time but I guess that's just how bad our roads are.

Sadly, don't think I can get a replacement and fitted in time before the holiday to the Isle of Wight so no island circuit for me.

Depending on what sort of condition the rim is in, you could try taking it to a LBS to get them to replace the spokes and true it. I've done that with a few damaged wheels.

Did a fairly hilly 50 miles this morning, but I swear, sorting out the garden in the afternoon is more knackering! Shattered now, putting the feet up and the Mrs is preparing a Sunday roast, can't wait. I may see how possible it is to inhale food.

snip Roadys sportive

Sounds like you had a good time and well done for your first one. I think once you get to a certain level (ours) you can do longer rides if you need too without worrying too much. Our legs are stronger than we think and we shouldnt be intimidated by thinking everyone else is faster than we are.

@Jonny69 - or anyone with vintage/retro bikes.. What are your thoughts in terms of the brakes? Currently non-aero brake levers are on the bike i'm restoring, however I'm thinking of upgrading these to aero brakes, not sure which ones yet. OR would you preferably keep them original? If I go aero, I'd upgrade the callipers as well, not a huge ordeal changing these from original for me..

Did a local sportive today only 40 odd miles but with 3500 feet of climbing including 3 cat 3 climbs. I know its not a race but out of the 125 i came first :D

Ended up doing a few extra miles for a total of 80. Even though the vast majority of them were at a speed I'd consider pretty slow I'm surprisingly knackered. Doesn't bode well for my hopes to do more intense stuff next week :p

Not seeing any rim damage so shall be taking it to the LBS tomorrow, by happy chance I guess I could stop in at the local brewery to pick up a bottle or 2.....

Stupid question...just take the wheel or the whole bike? I said it was a stupid question!

Just the wheel :p That said i do feel like i get some looks walking around with bike wheels. I didn't steal them, honest! :(

Depends what you're using the bike for, but i would definitely recommend going for a modern brake set. I didn't go for aero brake levers in the first place on mine because i didn't think "aerodynamics" would make that big of a difference, but non-aero levers can get very uncomfortable on long rides. Modern side pull caliper brakes have more stopping power, are less prone to fail due to age and aren't all that expensive, maybe you could get away without them but for such a critical component i don't think it's really worth it.

Said it was a silly question :(:p

With the wheel off, not seeing any issues with the rim so hopefully easy to get it sorted out. Surprised I didn't really notice sooner being when spinning the wheel it hits the brakes.
