Indeed. I log all of my exercise on Strava (well, aside from strength training but if Strava had decent support for that I'd use it).

I wouldn't log something as a 'ride' that was so ridiculously incomparable though - 27mph just looks really silly.

edit: I've not used a spin bike in a gym but as far as I know they have all the usual stats and the better models even have power, though you can pretty much ignore that unless it's a watt bike or something.

Trainer rides are a bit silly on Strava, because the speed and distance are pretty meaningless. It's not comparable to actual riding. I wouldn't mind if Strava offered any sensible way to filter them out, but it doesn't.

If the speed of the chain matches you can pretty much assume it will be compatible.

I've tried nearly all the chain types you can buy and they're all much of a muchness. Lots of people have brand loyalty or different experiences though. I usually go for whatever is cheapest on CRC or Wiggle - which is often Shimano.

Most times there are two options for amount of links and both will be too many links for your bike so just buy whichever is cheapest and then use the Sheldon Brown technique for working out the correct length when you install the new chain on your bike.

edit: Can't comment on jockey wheels I'm afraid.

I have no brand loyalty as such :) bar DHB gear which I simply like because it fits well and is good value for money.

but yeah, I have never replaced a chain that has had less than 2.5k miles on it.

The dumb thing is that you can tick something to say it was on a stationary trainer but that actually does...nothing.

It does on 3rd party sites, like Jonathan O'Keeffe's Strava Annual Summary (super useful) and I think on Veloviewer as well. Sad that other sites make better use of the Strava API than they do themselves!!

Ah, wasn't meaning to suggest you were just being a chain fanboi :p

I have managed to burn through all brands of chains at ridiculous rates. I'm hoping being a bit better about maintenance on my new bike will reduce that.

Yup, sad but not surprising. Oh well.

KMC chain - as for size - big cog/big cog plus 2 links is ideal size.

Then check it against the number of links on your old chain. (not the length as it's likely the old chain is stretched.)

I do log all my commutes but I should probably put them as private as they must be a little dull for anyone that follows me.

meh I log all my rides but then again I use strava to mainly motivate my self and keep track of my activities that's that :) if anyone decides to fallow me then hey ho?! :)

Even the 11-speed SRAM ones which don't list as compatible with Shimano?

As long as you can buy it without sleeves, amirite? ;) :D

Saying that I did buy some more Sportful baselayers and they're sleeveless. I've got arm warmers for the cold! (stupidly bought baselayers with long arms before).

Nothing surprises me any more from Strava.

Same goes for the "Commute" tick....it doesn't filter them in any way that I can see!

Funny you should mention that... A few days I found out where to filter it! If you goto Training/Training Log you can include or exclude Commutes with a tickbox at the top! They really need to add that to the 'My Activities' listing...

The dumb thing is that you can tick something to say it was on a stationary trainer but that actually does...nothing.

Except excluding a map from the activity, I seem to recall another change as well but can't recall which/where but it's only small...

See I've been very good with my new bike, much better than the old which did similar miles with only about 10 cleans in it's 18 month life! Really should put the chain checker on to see just how bad! ;)

Because for a lot of people strava has taken the place of a written training log?

Does for me, I wouldn't keep a training log as I really don't do any structured 'training' just riding and bits of activity to help with that (like hill reps).

KMC make Shimano chains, so a HG73 chain, say, is the same as a KMC X.73 chain. Pick whichever is cheaper. KMC do various variants - L is light, EL is extra light, SL is super light, I forget which is the lightest, but I do recall that the difference is piddly so probably not worth worrying about. They do chains with "ecoteq" coating which are supposed to be more rust resistant, which might be a good idea if you've managed to kill one within 800 miles!

Thanks for that Von, I'd found the info about L/EL/SL before (think maybe even you answered a previous question of mine about it!). Ecoteq sounds like the way forwards, although I'm tempted to try SRAM if grudas can't kill them for more than triple my mileage! ;)

Anyone have any recommendations on other places than Wiggle who are always good on stock/choice? I'm not too worried about price, anything under £30 I guess!

Shimano chains may be "made by" KMC, but that does not mean that they are the same. I'd still recommend KMC branded chains just because they have the master link that makes them a lot easier to install, and even possible to reinstall if you ever have to take it off for whatever reason.

I see Happy Chap on the Strava club has posted another lol-tastic ride 42 miles @ 26.9 mph :p

I might have to do a turbo ride where I don't hook up any resistance to see if I can beat him.

I actually don't mind seeing some turbo rides. Just to see how mad some are. Friend of mine who was in the female nationals last year has managed to do 3hr sessions! Mental toughness doesn't even get close!

Still off work today, but finally feeling bit better so went out on the bike as I couldn't stay in again and felt like my lack of doing anything was contributing to me feeling awful. Quick 12 miles and felt lot better than Saturday when I thought I was better! So shall be back at work tomorrow but going to be sacking off any thoughts of tting this week and just try get some steady miles in before weekend away on stag do!

That would work fine but it's a bit OTT to buy a Red level chain for your bike, or a Dura Ace level one either for that matter. When I buy Shimano chains I'll often get Ultegra but that's simply because it's often £13 instead of £12 (that was for 10 speed chains, it's a little more for 11 now I've moved over but still quite cheap).

CRC are generally the place I go to when I don't buy from Wiggle. In fact, I go there a lot more now that you can get 10% off one order per month from CRC. It makes them very cheap indeed.

Agreed. I was going to post this earlier too but forgot. I wouldn't see it as a reason to get or not get KMC or Shimano chains.

Yeah. I've managed 1.5 hours and that was seriously hard. I tried for a 2 hour session and just couldn't take the boredom :p The shorter and more intense sessions are actually much easier to put up with.

Glad to hear you're feeling better. Slow and steady does sound like the way to go.

Are you getting any sense out of your power meter yet?

Yes I think so. I haven't been using it in the most scientific way but I am certainly beginning to gauge how hard my efforts are as power is a relative term, rather than HR which can be delayed and inaccurate. I now have an measured scale as to how hard I am trying and I know from looking over my 10 second average just how hard I'm going. I now know roughly how many Watts I will put down over certain efforts. I have that "instinct" as it were.

I tend to forget about it on hills, especially intense hills like Shaley where I'm just focussing on getting up it!

I need to perhaps start using it as a training aid for tempo rides and stop forgetting that I have it. I think where it really comes into its own are longer less steep climbs.

Tell me about it...

What annoys me more is that people in my club log them on Strava (that bit is OK!) but it appears in the club weekly charts. So you get all these people with 35kmh average speeds on the leaderboard that completely distorts everything!

If we are moaning about Strava, I want a shot!

People who create new segments within existing segments, either making it 0.1km shorter/longer and giving it a name such as "The FULL xxxxx" or "the REAL xxxxx"..... Ban them all!
