But that's a one way street leading to nowhere. ;)

Indeed, every western country or at least close to is right wing.

It is funny how a predominately Conservative (right wing) board has so many views on where the labour party should head.

I have never had conservative leanings even if my income and education would say I should.

The reality is ever since New Labour took a lurch to the right they forgot about their core policies and the people who keep them in power. Instead they chose to court business and the richest 5% of the country, this essentially split their vote.

The SNP have remained left leaning which virtually wiped out labour north of the border, good for them if they have stayed true to their principles.

They should go to the right to really pee off all those socialist ******* that were protesting the other day. Leave them with micky mouse parties that will never see a chance of winning seats, and give them more of a reason to shout that PR is the best thing since sliced bread and is the saviour.

And watch them lose the plot completely when the UK votes for a Con/UKIP coalition :D

Hahaha, they would go ape **** mental :D :D

I think this guardian piece has really summed up the feelings of many Scots and I imagine many British people regarding the labour party.

All they had to do was stay they'd end austerity yet they seemed to be offering more austerity the same package as the conservatives.

It must have been a difficult choice for many south of the border as the two parties were similar.

I'm not sure if that is really the case for us Scots. Unfortunately almost everyone I know voted SNP. The majority of them couldn't name a single of their policies.

It's a sad state of affairs but SNP has a lot of support up here not because they are the best, or even a good, party but because they've succeeded in stirring up so much nationalism.

The average Scot has a bone to pick with the English over some injustice they see having been done hundreds of years ago. The SNP are trying to breed Anti-British sentiments. It wouldn't surprise me if the reason they introduced their ill thought Offensive Behaviour at Football Act is because they want to ban the singing of Rule Britannia and God Save The Queen by Rangers fans who are traditionally all unionists.

Every single word of that is absolute nonsense.

They need to look at their whole team. It's just a bunch of identikit career politicians. I think the public has a lot of respect (except maybe Scotland because of better together) for Alistair Darling as Chancellor, as he was steering the country through what was seen as Brown's mess and did pretty well. It would be sensible tbh to make him a Lord and put him back in the cabinet if he wants the job. He is literally better than anyone else they could pick.

Yep, Alistair Darling was pretty much the only Labour MP that i have any respect for, seems to have his head screwed on the right way and knew what he was talking about, he dampened down the worst of Gordon Brown and god know what would have happened to UK if he wasn't there

Hang on so I call someone a retard and get suspended and the OP calls OCUK members retards and gets away with it? Double Standards run high in this place.

How many seats did TUSC get this time?

Why did Maggie Thatcher get in?
It was not a large middle and upper class vote block. It was working class voters, fed up with the FU of the Labour party and the unions. Then Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock promoting the socialist dream.

Working people are always the largest voting group and Labour must address their wants and needs. Promote wealth creation not just wealth distribution.

It may be another 10 years on past election cycles before they can return to government but they will definitely need to win over middle England, not just the Northern cities to do so.

Labour are screwed. They can't offer anything the Conservatives aren't, they are just as committed to private finance in the NHS, and they can't afford to 'out-progressive' the tories on tax.

I didn't ask for a poll but it does help to demonstrate that nigh on 50% of OcUK forum posters are retards who shouldn't be permitted to vote.

I love this. I call one person a moron and get a ban. He calls half of the forum retards and gets nothing. Awesome moderation!

There's a decent explanation of a two-axis system I tend to refer to on that political compass site.

https://www.politicalcompass.org/

Thanks for reminding me about that. Bit surprised at my result there.

Your Political Compass

Economic Left/Right: -2.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.92

That's my "idealist" position, but my "realist" position is further right IMO.

What is the source for this?
What are the values based upon?
I was unaware that the Italians are one of the authoritarian and the Irish one of the most right wing in Europe?

It's an arbitrary scale, with a different origin to other political compass charts (I assume).

In other words the one for political parties puts them relative to each other. That one of countries seems to put them relative to "possible societies", i.e. with communist states on the left and capitalist states on the right, liberal ones down and authoritarian ones up.

All countries in the EU are capitalist and fairly controlling over their populations so I assume that's why they all end in the top right.

As for specific differences - just the authors (secret) opinions.
