What are people's experiences with newer bb standards, like bb30 or pf30? I've been doing some reading out of idle curiosity and there seems to be a lot of fussing about creaking and so on, and it not being like the good old days of threaded bbs...

My C60 has a slight take on BB30. My experience has been fine so far although I've not had the bike for that long. Installing was a breeze but I did have the tools.

I've taken a mates BB30 apart for a strip down and re grease after it developed a creak. Has been fine since.

My cartridge threaded BB on my winter bike has been superb. Flawless. No problems.

I wish they would just decide on a specification and stick to it!

Personally I can't see any reason to go anything other than BSA if you've got the option.

See, this is what I'm thinking. Having just taken a HTII BB apart the other day for a clean it seems like a brilliant design. Why you'd go from that to relying on an interference fit at the frame is beyond me.

I guess I'll find out when I pick up a carbon bike in a year or so, given that they all seem to come with BB30 or whatever these days.

Planet X's new RT-90 carbon fibre frame costs a whopping £900, and that still comes with BSA threaded BB, so clearly someone still thinks they're a good idea at the high end.

Having an inboard bearing pressed into the frame supports the bearing better and allows the frame to be wider and stiffer around the BB joint.
I agree that the pressfit interface is a PITA but, on the whole, it makes for better frames.

maybe so, but for the vast majority of riders (and I include all leisure riders in this) the 0.01% improvement in frame performance is offset by the faffy maintenance and almost-inevitable unavailability of spares for these "standards" in a few years time

so, in conclusion, bring back threaded square taper.

Went out for a ride after work yesterday with a friend (Richie) - https://www.strava.com/activities/302551273

We'd only half decided on a route, just knew approx where to head and which direction. Took a 'shortcut' at one point and failed miserably so had to back track!

Great ride, fantastic weather. Buried myself several times on hills to try and keep up with Richie. The headwinds were brutal at times but it wasn't cold. I'm getting better on hills, my standing technique is loads better and I find I can stand and maintain it, like onTin Hill. Although a few miles before getting back to Hereford my knees were done - I blame all the walking around at Alton Towers on Sunday ;)

I'd be raging hard at Evans and BMC. That's pretty shocking to say the least.

Same, that is shocking. Know anyone else with one? BMC owners Facebook group/Strava group where you could ask if anyone has a spare?

Whatever my Giant Defy 1 2015 has... (not sure if BB30?) Is not great. I noticed on my ride last night that I still have a distinct 'click' when putting down any real power. I've replaced chain ring bolts, refitted headset a couple of times, checked saddle, rebuilt wheels, refitted pedals & left crank arm. My next step is removing the cranks completely to clean and regrease BB bearings. I have no tools to remove or refit them if I have a problem with them 'popping' out?! :(:o

Sent an email to the BMC customer services email address and posted the same message to their facebook page last night.

As made popular from various internet meme's...I signed off my email with just 'regards' as apposed to 'kind regards' to show the reader how angry I am with the situation.

Quality chain rings for sale, plenty of use left in them...

Do they come with a supply of 'compatible' chains and a cassette or two? ;)

Ouch! Burned! ;)

I hate to say it but occasionally a 'public' post (like Facebook) is a great way of getting the service we expect.

Tenuous comparison - bought a boxed pizza from Supermarket, came without plastic covering and only around 60% size it should've (broken almost in half with half missing). Contacted them by email and they said to return it to the Supermarket, we couldn't do this as we'd already eaten it (Pizza is pizza! :D). Posted on their Facebook page (with pictures) and within a day they had contacted us for our address and sent vouchers for £10 worth of their product from any Supermarket (Pizza was on a deal and only cost £1.50!). A few days later had an extra email response (to our first message) with another £5 voucher. WINNING! 10x credit and a freezer full of pizza! :D

Cervelo use PF30.

Plastic cups go into the frame so you can't ruin the frame.

BB30 bearings fit into the cups and the bearings can be had on the shelf in any bearing suppliers, you don't need special bike ones. I got new ones the next day in a town 500km inland from Sydney for $50.

Now I need helmet mounted light recommendations for a rear facing light, anybody?!
