Ur kid is 2 fat

Because some people continue to believe stuff that isn't true.

Why are you putting spaces before question marks, then calling other people morons?

One space makes me a moron ?

at 1:16am ?

my word!!!!!;)

looks like it auto corrects it down to one space... Oh well never mind ! x x x

If putting a space between end sentence and question, and other actions around that level, makes you a moron... I'm pretty sure everyone here has commited as awful a crime as that at some point.

Exactly! Moron-fest!

Derp. The point is that you're calling people morons over small petty things, and now you're doing the same sort of thing you were moaning about other people doing.

You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.

e: to confirm, that was one of my better threads, all of which are useless and terrible.

tbh the kis looks like hes carrying a little bit of puppy fat but i thought that would be about right given his age.

I'm not sure I would trust the photo as being current tbh. They will have picked the most normal picture from family album. He probably is a bit podgy if his BMI is high . Also as a child it isn't the actual BMI figure you are used to as an adult as someone mentioned this was in the normal range. It will be based on centile charts for his age. The thing is no parent likes to hear their kid is fat, and most simply don't believe you when you say it. it really can be a difficult conversation to have and I'm not convinced the letter approach is a great way. something definitely does need to be done at early ages to make families aware though

That tool seems rather strange.
Frighteningly odd.

There is no way anyone should be using that tool it is blatantly wrong and should be taken off the site. BMI has no place in paediatrics at all. The actual relevant points here are:

1) The kid is very short for his age and his family in the picture appear to broadly be average to above average.
2) As the best indicator of growth in children is height we have to ask why he is short in that case.
3) Are there known or potential medical problems in the family? Yes
4) Is there evidence of a lack of calories? If anything the opposite.
5) Do families often lie about the rubbish they feed kids? Yes
6) Do kids lie about what rubbish they eat? Yes
7) Is the evidence of unhealthy feeding patterns in the family? Yes

Leaving the question that something is possibly amiss here and it's worth having a chat to determine why that may be the case. Seems perfectly reasonable screening to me especially when people are always saying we waste to much on treatment and not enough on prevention. Here is some evidenced based prevention and people don't like it.

Is BMI contentious across the board and if so does it vary by dept (NICU, PICU etc)?

How do practioners view it? Is there a spread or a consensus?

BMI has no place in basic paeds, intensive care, or say something like anorexia in CAMHS . Length is the best determinator of growth in children upto puberty. Weight has relevance when it is out of synch with length. Weight is not just a measure of "fat" it is a measure of total body weight therefore in the two settings you mentioned excess weight would more than likely be attributable to excess water due to the osmotic problems you cause when giving someone their nutrition by intravenous means along with the associated kidney problems often found that will themselves cause a degree of water retention like old dears on their "water tablets". Weight at ad hoc times is meaningless as you need to measure it over time at the same time of the day ie first thing in the morning. Weight is generally used as a measure of fluid in the body rather than growth bar in eating disorders and obvious failure to thrive. And even in those then what you actually examine is calories in. Because if calories in is sufficient and you don't see trends over time then you need really test the former and keep an eye on the later for sneaky exercising.

The goal would really be see that you have an even growth of length over time. So starting from an early age you plot the percentile charts now if someone has short parents and they are on the 2nd percentile and stay there probably no issue. Now if someone was over the 75th percentile with tall parents and has dropped down below the 50th (just under average height) you may start to ask questions.

You examine things over time and if some drops or gains 2 percentile bands you start investigations. That's why parents get the little red books with all the weights and lengths in so you can see the trend over time. BMI itself tells you nothing and makes a whole load of assumptions. I think that is a common view I am sure Minstadave would say more or less the same.

The content of the entire forum isn't as small and petty as a misplaced full stop.
