Moshpits / Ninja pits

O Zefan I bet Ur well fun @ parties:p

Absolute worst nightmare, being in any sort of pit, mosh or otherwise. Looks horrendous:eek::confused:

Pretty much the most stupid thing ever IMO. I can understand why it happens, but I still think they're generally awful. Those of you getting annoyed at "those ones who don't get out the way, then get annoyed when they get hurt!" - you're committing/condoning assault. Doing so in the name of "having a good time" isn't an excuse. Someone doesn't opt in to these things purely by being in that place at that time. People shouldn't feel threatened or pressured to move out of other people's way against their will or under threat of injury.

hahaha, you really do opt in to pits though by standing in certain places.

It's not about you being a bore or anything but going on about condoning assault is making you sound like a bit of a drama queen.

I can understand why people don't get it, if i look on as an outsider it does sound awful/weird but if you were into this kind of music you would understand, its a cultural thing :p

YUP,
front = squished in like sardines
front middle=Danger of stage diving fatties
sides/back = stand and get drunk
Middle = pit of doom

Unless its a festival then you might end up with a wall of death in your tent

At most places you are able to stand a bit further back or at the sides and enjoy the music without being in the thick of it. To those saying its their worst nightmare, hate it etc I will take a guess at you never being in one.

Jumping up and down to music is often way more painful than moshpits too. Rammstein, linkin park and Eminem were that busy up near the front that when I jumped up I was literally carried 10 meters from where I jumped!

Don't be daft. Everyone can tell when there is one person being a tool

not always... at what point did you enter the mosh pit, what you saw is subjective and not what everyone else saw

sure someone continually going around being a dick... but there are plenty of grey areas

the idea that a mosh pit can act like some form of hive mind and dish out appropriate punishment to anyone 'being a dick' is flawed

potential for misunderstanding is huge and that is why fights can and do occur

Mmmm, I think you should anticipate and expect people to be dancing and being boisterous. It is a rock concert after all. I do get very annoyed when people ask me to move, or stop jumping, because I'm tall (which happened at Muse at the O2 in the first 10 rows! The O2 seems to get terrible 'half-fan' crowds).

The tipping point is aggressive / sharp pushing. That is not acceptable at any mainstream concert. At niche metal gigs, they I suppose its a bit different as everyone knows what they are getting into.

I'm going to foo fighters very soon and I think that sort of music doesn't encourage mosh pits of the 'circular' variety, so should be a good balance!

I seem to recall me and you being in the same crowd crush during Muse in Cardfiff in.... 06!? Dat crush was not fun :p

You watched the Woodstock 99 videos when Korn played? There's one video were the crowd is just like one massive entity moving as a wave. Incredible and I've never seen it at another festival since they started implementing the break barriers after the Pearl Jam slot at the Roskilde Festival ended up with something like 8 or 9 people dead.

I used to enjoy a good mosh pit but usually at the tamer end of the scale. As soon as the circle grows too wide and it's just full a nutters sprinting with fist/elbows flailing then I'm out. Prefer it when it's packed enough so you can't fall over.

Nowadays I prefer a sweaty rave so all the above has been replaced by hugging and talking rubbish for hours to someone you've just met.

I saw Limp Bizkit last year and there were a couple of complete **** that were basically slamming into everyone (facing them or not) to create space so about 5-6 of them could exclusively slam into each other really hard. The effect of this was the rest of us were totally sardines in the surrounding areas. That really got my goat and almost spoilt the whole thing. They were out of control and had no respect or concern for anyone else.

Permanent gig banishment, I think.

Watch the Theives cover by Limp Bizkit at that gig

I do enjoy them, last good one for me was Slipknot and Korn in Dublin. Great atmosphere and energy :) I don't remember it getting too crazy like fights breaking out which was good.

I used to enjoy a good mosh, but it's definitely a young mans game ;)

One crowd mosh that was too much though was Monsters of Rock in 1989, Guns N Roses came on and it took me about 3 songs to squeeze my way to a few rows from the front, in a crowd of 110,000, absolutely insane. You weren't even standing on the ground, just peoples ankles and when the crowd surged you just swept 30 ft in any direction. People were freaking out left right and centre and many were getting pulled out over the barriers. It only took me 1 song to make my way back out of there :p

3 people went down and didn't get back up again and were crushed to death. I remember getting home a few days later and my family were freaking out as on the radio it announced the deaths, describing the unfortunate victims as guys with long hair wearing leather jackets.....well, that narrowed it down! :p

Watch out guys, dad's here

It's funny actually, I've been into heavy metal etc for about 15 years now, ever since my early teens. I didn't mind pits so much in my teens (moshing was something entirely different), I was always at the front at gigs, didn't mind being shoved and shoving back but mainly just wanted to be at the front so I had space to headbang and get a decent view, so it came with the territory. But it got stupid and boring pretty quickly for me and tended to spoil it rather than 'enhance' the experience. I'll find myself a place at the back (or at the bar) now and let the next generation have their time at the front.

I do however fondly remember seeing Bolt Thrower at the Underworld, the pit was insane.

Never really understood moshing - but I guess everyone is different. I go to a gig to enjoy the music and performace not borderline fight with complete strangers for 'fun'.

Not my idea of a good time, but if it is yours - more power to you. You will find me at a safe distance with a pint and possibly a comfy chair (I'm getting old :p )

What is the difference between a mosh pit and ninja pit? I imagine a ninja pit isn't as cool as it sounds.

I've never heard of a ninja pit. But he's probably talking about a hardcore pit. Which is a whole other level of pit fit. Search Youtube for Code Orange Kids live (can't link because swearing) and click the first result (multi cam) and tell me that within 3 minutes of that video you're not hoping several of the people in the crowd get knocked the **** out for being apes.

Love em. However I'm the scrawny guy that spends half of the time getting picked up off the floor.
Last year I done my achilles in during a pit. Never noticed until the next day but that was a few weeks of painful walking!
