one long year if they are still counting seasons as years

didn't someone in the TV show say summer had lasted years? or something similar

Yes, one of the fantastical aspects of the GOT universe is that seasons are very long and also very variable in length, so can last years or even decades.

I can't remember off hand how long the present summer has been (9 years?) but I'm sure there'll be a wiki somewhere with the info.

Season 5 is awful.

The possibility that any character could die any moment is what made GOT. So far only 3 minor characters have died.

If GRRM was still at the helm he'd have killed off Peter Dinklage/Jon Snow/other major character episode 1.

GRRM is still writing his books, and he didn't do any of the things you are suggesting in his episode 1. Book, not really but anyway.
Some of the little folk are indeed still alive in his timelines. Selmy for one!

The Red Witch is useless 90% of the time, she stands there doing a whole lot of nothing. We have literally seen more magic come out of her lady parts than anything else.

This is something that is emphasised more in the books as Tyrion's story is a bit longer getting to Meereen (he isn't even there yet in the books) and there's examples of the Red Priests / Priestesses mainly using parlour tricks to appear more powerful than they really are.

Season's not over yet

I haven't read the books... But

How do we get sham from that ghost freak abomination creature she gave birth too?

I thought the sham was the fancy fire shows, which she said was just to look good, please the crowd kind of thing "not magic" (paraphrased)

That ghostly thing she bared looked pretty freaking evil and real... Is she in kahoots with the undead type in the North ?

Some kind of disguised necromancy ? A lot of people seem to be playing with it in the GoT world..

Magic exists in the world and certain characters are able to use it, but out of all the various gods and beliefs people have it isn't entirely clear which one(s) is/are the right one(s) and whether a character appealing to a specific supernatural force to do stuff for them actually means it's that force and not some other one or it's just them assigning magic to a certain god and it not just being 'magic' (if that makes sense).

Being 'A Song of Ice and Fire'/WWs/dragons/the seasons etc the impression is made there's a kind of supernatural balancing act between the two, with neither necessarily being 'good' or 'evil'. (quoting Tyrion: "The Lord of Light wants his enemies burned. The Drowned God wants them drowned. Why are all the gods such vicious see you next tuesdays? Where is the god of t*ts and wine?!"), fitting with the whole 'shades of grey' thing Martin likes.

I guess with winter comes the long night.
are they going to film the whole of the last series in the dark :D

I enjoyed the episode, shared peoples unsullied frustrations and I'm staggered at how far some small elements have diverged from the book. It remains to be seen if discarded plot is gone for good for pacing reasons or will be picked up next year. Loving it though, must reread books this summer.

A bit longer, that's an understatement :p Luckily the TV series cut out the 50 chapters on the boat playing chess. :D I have just watched the first two from this series, I honestly wish I could have a memory wipe to remove those books. It's ruined the tv series for me now. I just can't get into the tv series again after that slog of boredom. :(

Approximately 3 years.

George R.R. Martin originally planned for a five year gap after A Storm of Swords for characters to mature. However, Martin instead wrote A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons to bridge the gap toward the end of the series. The two books overlap in time in different settings to cover many characters in great detail during this time period.

Pretty sure something in this series mentioned something about 3 years aswell.

Always a tricky one with a TV series unlike books where its "much easier" to write in a compelling part. Many many shows have crashed and burnt after killing off a character that "made the show" or a large number of the audience connected to the show through.

I'm the opposite, I get ****ed off when a major character gets the chop every other week. Take Oberyn. Fantastic character yet he was gone within the season. I'd have loved to see more of him. I'm not asking for happily ever afters for the characters I like, but I'd like them to have more than 17 minutes of screen time before being killed off.

You do appreciate that the show is following the major character storylines from the books, yes? If Tyrion isn't dead in the books, why should he die in the TV show? I know they've deviated somewhat from the books but the main storytelling is still the same.

Yeah I agree with that. I don't think GoT would be as fun to watch if you killed off people like Tyrion, Jon or Stannis. They make it what it is.

Exactly. It never crossed my mind that the maester would be zombifying the Mountain. Obviously he's up to something but I hadn't worked it out and I consider myself to be pretty eagle-eyed.

Can't visit this thread again, too many hints.

There was a big argument between the grand mastor and the guy fixing the mountain up about how the cure was unnatural and would change him. I haven't read the books but the assumption I made was that he would come back as some kind of dead magified beast rather than the person he was before. Using the term Zombified fits in perfectly with what they were portraying, especially after later discussions about how the "project" was going.

It's not a book spoiler, it's common sense.

I'm still trying to work out why stand is needed to kill his daughter. The blood of the others was good enough wasn't it? Or are we just assuming the witch wanted the daughter out of the way as a piece of power play?

Mellisandre or however you spell it is clearly a nutcase, but I can't help feel bad for her because all those prophecies and signs and things she saw initially that lead her to stannis were actually about danny. Except everyone assumed it was a male, not a female, and nobody knew about dannys existence. All that for nothing.

Also as a total side note, after lots of research on the wiki, and books etc. I'm 100% convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that john snow is a targaryan.

Without a doubt imo.

The only question that remains is who is the third dragon rider?

It's either Tyrion (God knows how he'd get on it though) or the other Targaryen prince who is presumed dead.

John or Danny could have children, most of the big families have targaryan blood ties, though quite slim ones or a dragon will die (undead evil white walker dragon anyone?!?!?!)

Even among the old valyrians, dragon riding was very rare. As far as im aware and I think its mentioned a few times (at least in the book) nobody has ever tamed 2 dragons. So danny will likely pick drogon or even seems to have done so, and i think in doing so, the other 2 will be less welcoming of her now she's made her choice.

Stannis does have the blood of the dragon, he may well end up somehow getting one, perhaps wont side with danny either... so many possibilities and I'm really enjoying not knowing now that the show has caught up with and slightly diverged from the book, its far more exciting. Shame I'll now have to wait....
