The AMD dilemma because of freesync.

You 35-90 is perfectly fine imo. Someone feel free to show me benchmarks where they get a constant 90+ fps in the newest games excluding aa especially with a single GPU.

I stand corrected then.. Still a very nice range though.

160hz WOW! Now am very interested!

edit
Nope ill wait for 1440p :D
The 30Hz wows me more (would be great for mmos!).

I've been waiting for AOC to show their hands...and they don't disappoint so far. Kinda glad that I didn't act on impulse and bought the Asus.

Will wait for 2560 res IPS with 30-144Hz freesync range :D

Battlefield 4 regularly goes above 90fps for me even when maxed out, plenty of games with a max fps range that goes above 90fps so it would be nice for the range to be higher.

The whole point of freesync/gsync is to remove tearing and make the fluctuation in framerate not as noticeable, it's not really about what constant fps you get.

Probably won't be long before we see an IPS 1440p panel with a higher range anyway and probably cheaper than the ASUS.

Yeah i would even argue that 144 fps vs 90fps freesync or gsync would be very hard to tell the difference.

Well, well, what to say, what to do. Quite baffled as to what to do at the moment regarding my setup. Had my Benq freesync screen for quite a while now. amazing screen, a real thing of beauty playing games. My 7950 crossfire been excellent at keeping the frames well up there at the higher ranges that this screen yearns for, but here is the dilemma. Not been able to see freesync yet because the 7950 is not supported, been waiting and waiting for this FURY X, now it's here I'm just not sold on it. Performance at 1440p seems quite meh, regarding its numbers my aging cards gets pretty much where the Fury X sits (when crossfire bloody works that is). I've been so pumped to get a beast of a high end single card that's going to give me 50% more performance than my 7950 crossfire and finally freesync. Sadly the Fury X looks like a pretty expensive upgrade for what you get at 1440p.

So where the hell do I go from here. Man the 980ti G1 is incredibly tempting, but I want to see freesync in all its glory. Do I buy a 390x to see me through till hbm2/early next year and use freesync at 45fps lol or do I just keep on rolling this 7950 crossfire setup for another 6 months putting up with shoddy AMD drivers with no crossfire support in new games.

Boy o boy, got money saved up and all, feel bit bummed by fury X in all honesty.

Sorry, but, you are getting caught up in all the stupid drivel going around these forums. On your monitor you will not see the difference between a 980ti and the fury. The 980ti is a slightly better card sure, but in the real world, on a freesync monitor you aren't going to notice the few FPS difference between them

And unlike the 980Ti, the Fury is a completely new, so there should be good gains in performance over the next few driver releases.

I guarantee that you will be gobsmacked by the improvement in your system if you get the FuryX.

To be honest if you had any of the top end cards in your machine you would be hard pressed to tell a difference unless you were looking at numbers and not playing the game.

Yup it certainly would be nice to have a higher range but like I said, in the majority of new games, using one GPU and Max settings outside of aa, you are going to struggle getting 90+ fps most of the time and games are only going to get more and more demanding unless developers and nvidia/amd make damn good use of DX 12...

Bf 4 is pretty old now and runs well on most setups (although runs crap on DX 11 for me even with low settings)

Afaik, we only have the following IPS 144hz free/g sync screens in the pipeline to be released this year

- Asus IPS 144hz gsync swift
- benq IPS 144hz free and possibly g sync

Unfortunately nothing from the likes of Samsung or dell at least not yet...

Yes there is a small difference with freesync on-off, and many games can get that with single GPU everything maxed out. (graphics).

TESO in delves, Beyond Earth, Skyrim, EVE Online, World of Warships
At least those I play....

thank you for taking the time to reply guys, read all your thoughts. Had some time to think about it, going to roll with the same screen and jump on a Fury X when prices go lower than £500. Couple that with Windows 10, DX12 and Freesync all playing nice, think that will be more than good enough.

I'm not one for fanboy brand loyalty, im not one of these "I need the best" type of people, I just need a setup that does me well in games where I can enjoy fluid gaming with lots of eye candy thrown in. I'm going to carry on with my 7950's for the time being, after all getting upwards of 100fps at 1440p in the games I play with mates is not exactly a problem.....my screen is due back from BenQ any day now with the latest firmware, which according to others, really improves the screen anyway. Will wait a couple months and see where the dust settles.

Thanks again all

Excellent thinking, prices I'm sure will come down during that time plus you will have more alternatives.

Wise decision Tony and it has made me just think **** it, get a freesync screen now as chances are I will keep my 290 till the end of the year (and lots of games between now and then), if not longer and when I need to upgrade just get whatever AMD have, as long as you can play games at settings, fps etc. that you are happy with then that is all that matters at the end of the day.

Of course there are going to be lots of games where you do get over 90 fps "most of the time" but generally those are the older titles (ones, which the majority of people might not even play any longer, the only oldish game I still play atm is bf 4) or games that just aren't all that demanding anyway. I haven't played any of those games that you just mentioned :p

I had a look at a review of the 980 ti on techpowerup and apart from a handful of mostly older games, most of the other games benchmarks were below the 90 fps mark.

As long as you can cap the fps limit to 90 or dial up AA/VSR/DSR to keep below 90 fps then all is good imo.

Wise choice mate..

get in the MM and get 2 290x second hand. Beast performance (when it bloody works, as you say), and freesync when you use it as a single card solution (and hopefully when xfire freesync shows up). Assuming your PSU is up to the job.

They go for peanuts these days. £150ish for a 290p means you could beat fury x performance, get freesync and save £200 while you're at it.

Says the guy selling his 290s to buy a 980ti :p

good choice Tony, you have one of the best screens for gaming on the market right now. It would have been silly to change it for a few FPS that you probably wouldn't notice anyway.

I use that screen with a titan x and its very smooth with no Screen tearing.

I would go g-sync but the lack of hdmi(for consoles) puts me off.

Just to chime in here, I have the mg279q and it's a terrific piece of equipment - beautiful display. I don't find the 35-90hz range an issue since my FPS normally run in that range anyways in games (that's pretty much the ideal range for what a good GPU can push in modern games).

I would suggest OP stick with his Freesync display and upgrade to a 290x, or Fury X if he has money to burn.

So is there a consensus on a workaround or ETA for xfire support with Freesync? I was able to pick up a 295x2 very cheap from someone looking to "upgrade" - would be great if it worked with my display when I get it...

See the AMD drivers thread. there seems to be a working driver on guru3d. But it's a leaked driver, not an official release so YMMV.
