Having 3 bedroom doors replaced, now im aware that, yes there will be some minor alterations to the door dimensions needed, but the cheapest quote I got for fitting them (ive purchased them) was £140 per door?!?!!

Not to put too fine of a point on it, but are they having a sodding laugh?

I reckon it's a case of not really interested in the job, give a quote that makes it worthwhile but don't expect the work?

The other day some bloke was getting their haircut before me and I got the impression he was a tradesman as he was grumbling about having to drive back and fourth all over the place and how great it is when a job takes up a full day.

fit them yourself.

Youtube videos, pencil, chisel and maybe a plain/sander and you're sorted. It's really not a hard thing to do yourself.

I will be doing them myself, I just thought what a **** take, I was willing to pay a couple hundred quid for it to be done, but not to that degree.

Frankly your 'minor alterations' could mean anything.

We pay £25 a door set but that's pre made with linings and architraves they just need shooting in and levelling then the ironmongery is put on.

If you're asking for door blanks being fitted into unequal openings and all the ironmongery locks and hinges chopped in then it could well be 3 or 4 hours a door.

But yes 200 would be a reasonable estimate however your description is sketchy

Have you got an electric plane?

I do, I have already done one door and it took me an hour to take the edges off, and hang it. Considering that was my first attempt at door hanging ever, I imagine someone who knows what they were doing could have done it in considerably less.

Thats great. Better to take your time and do it right than rush and end up with a dolls house door! lol

Yikes! That's pricey.

However you'll need more than just a chisel as some have mentioned.

- Plane
- Sander
- Flat wood drill bit (and a drill!)

Can be done alone, but much easier and less errors will be made if working in pairs.

I've just done 9 in our place. Took a full weekend. All old doors, some warped. There wasn't a single straight frame.

Easy to do badly, time consuming to do well.
