Sunday Trading

I'm amazed that you guys down there still have Sunday trading laws. It's utterly antiquated and there is no need for the restrictions.

However, I'm desperate to find a job that doesn't involve me working every weekend...

I have to say I kinda miss quiet Sundays where nothing is open and it is all about spending time with family and friends.

Still, I guess in this modern fast moving world it isn't a bad thing for most people.

I agree with your sentiment and its not a bad thing that Sunday's aren't so busy.

I think I'd prefer the working day to be limited to 9 to 5 to try and maintain the "balance".

The problem with this being that if everyone works 9-5, you have to take time off to do anything.

If everyone worked different hours and had different days off, then if you need to e.g. go to the doctor, you can do it on your "weekend" no matter what day that is.

Will everyone be paid more for working on a Sunday?

No, they're currently paid more due to the restrictions. Now they'll be paid less.

Finally!

Agreed, also makes going out on a Sunday a pain in the **** as you have to make sure you're back by half 3 to go to the shop

The 5/2 day week is pointless and arbitrary anyway, people don't work on a 7 day cycle, we need to eat every day...

There are plenty of smaller shops that are open till 11pm on Sundays already...

Personally I avoid shopping at the weekend at all costs because it's busier, more annoying and the shelves are less well stocked usually, so this doesn't affect me. I feel sorry for retail employees though.

I'm with Freefaller. OP you're only 25 so you might not really remember the way things 'used to be'. I remember in the 80s everywhere stopped dead at 5pm on weekdays, and what you consider 'everything being dead' after 4pm on Sunday used to apply to all Saturday and Sunday pretty much. You stocked up at the greengrocer and butcher 9-5 Monday to Friday, and if you didn't you either went without until Monday rolled around again or you walked a few miles to the nearest off license or similar and crossed your fingers.

There's nothing wrong with some down time, especially as it relates to workers' rights etc. That said with unemployment these days I dare say it'd be a double edged sword to keep the workers on Mon-Fri and employ some of the jobless for weekends if Sat/Sun suddenly became 'normal days'.

I don't really care either way tbh, as in it wouldn't particularly bother or offend me if the 'weekend' became regular days regards trading hours. That said there's a lot to be said for regimented downtime and a chance to kick back and relax. Sundays are the de facto lazy day and if you REALLY need something chances are a supermarket already has a 24 hour 'garage' (read: small 24/7/365 supermarket) close enough to you.

Never understood why people were (thought most supermarkets stopped extra pay on Sunday's a while ago) paid more on a Sunday anyway, over say a Saturday. Other than religious reasons...

I'm not allowed to do anything on a Sunday over here. I cut the hedge once and was told off by a neighbour.

Because it's an unsociable time to work. Same reason why people get paid more to work at night time, or during bank holidays.

Finally a choice for people

So soon you can choose if you want a lazy quiet day at home with the family or you can choose to go to the shops if you need to.

I think this is bad news.

Personally I hate shopping so additional hours will not affect me at all. If you cannot buy food for the weekend on one trip to the shops, you are doing something wrong.

The larger stores all staff on a seven day rota anyway, to avoid overtime payments.

Terrible idea if it were here the wife could force me to go shopping or buying paint from a DIY store on a Sunday as well. :(

I'm so glad I don't live in the UK.

Shops are starting to open here in Belgium too on a Sunday there really isn't any need for it. It's one of the things I loved when I came here was the relaxed pace of Sunday life.
