New law!! for music cd/dvd owned, you're no longer allowed to copy songs for private use

So now instead of buying and ripping to your audio device you might as well just not buy and download illegally anyway, end of day you're still a criminal.

Same as ripping music, this will not change a single persons behaviour.

Wrong. I've already had to change my underwear twice when I heard the door knock.. They are coming to get me!
I might come clean to the next one I see. Take me away officer, let the mugger go, I've done far worse.. I ripped magic Mike.. Twice!

Well I hope all those Tory voters are satisfied  etc...

+1

However, what does it matter even if you download and pirate certain media? no one will actually know - that is unless you actually tell someone and show the public what you're doing. ;) :p

These laws are thought of only because they try to distract the public from big issues.

You heathen, devil incarnate! People like you need locking up, won't you please think of the artists?!

What I find odd about this is that the logical conclusion would be to no longer purchase CDs.

That gives them revenue, unlike piracy. But hey, you know, might as well lump it all together.

What is on all these phones though? That you see everyone carrying? Who carries dedicated MP3 players these days?

I do, my Walkman goes everywhere with me.

There's costs involved in distribution of physical media. There's a fraction of the cost of distribution of digital media. Beyond hosting and bandwidth. Digital distribution is much more profitable. Especially when they're charging you the exact same price for a digital release as a physical release. And my opinion on that is why buy the digital release when you can have and own a physical copy and rip it to a much higher bitrate for localised storage?

Why are people blaming the government? This was a legal challenge to a law the coalition brought in to allow it not a change by parliament.

Ripping CDs? Blank media? Is it 2002 still?

What a waste of time.

I still rip CD's. Some of us have an appreciation for sound quality. And you don't get that with the what? 256 kbps from iTunes, or 320 kbps from Beatport (I am aware you can buy lossless from BeatPort though, but as an example, the latest John Digweed Live in CD jumps from £12.30 for 320kbps to £51.90 for lossless. Or I can buy the CD for £9.99).

Exactly. And in my experience, bandcamp is the only place that seems to have gotten the pricing right for digital music. Same price regardless of format and bitrate. Whether that's 320kbps MP3, AAC, ALAC or FLAC. And artists can still sell physical media through bandcamp, which I still buy over the digital release, because buying the physical usually comes with a digital copy in whatever format you want, so you don't have to rip it yourself. But I do end up ripping it myself because muh accuracy.

Yeah, exactly. 100% logged EAC ripped FLAC's for me personally. Disc gets used once to rip prefect quality, then goes into the collection / storage for mint safekeeping.

I will admit, for DJ-ing with, the web releases are often superior as they do often include the individual tracks also. But as I said, £51.90 is a little rich for me when it comes to one mix compilation. At least with Amazons Autorip I get the mixes in lossless and tracks in VBR ~270 kbps.
