I don't see why it wouldn't be possible on a fast 144Hz IPS screen but I doubt it will be included. Manufacturers just don't seem interested in making new screens 3D vision certified. There's a chance that it cannot be used with Gsync modules perhaps at the moment, or might just be cost cutting and lack of perceived interest in the market for it now

This thread is interesting. I love my ROG Swift and it's one aspect of my setup that I wouldn't consider changing at the minute. I'd be very interested in comparisons between the TN and IPS versions of the Swift.
I would be upgrading purely for the IPS and IQ gains (if they are justified). Anything over 144Hz makes no difference to me as my 980Ti running at 1500 on the core doesn't regularly push past 100 or 120fps let alone 144. As for ULMB, I'm more interested in Gsync as I haven't played many games that are consistent with 100fps+ at Ultra settings, and at 1440p Ultra settings are still a requirement for visual excellence (give or take a few titles here and there).
An IPS Swift is more appealing to me than a 4K monitor due to the fact that single card GPU performance isn't ready for 4K. Pascal may get closer, but I'd prefer to see it push 1440p at 120fps+ rather than start over with the quest for 60-100fps at a higher resolution.

must be down to whether they bother to include certification which presumably comes at a cost and so maybe isn't something they're that interested in any more

Does certification mean that it wouldn't work at all, or that they simply don't say that it will, but if you bought the 3D Vision kit it would function just fine?
i've not seen a screen which can support it without proper certification. for instance the <correction> I meant Acer XB270HU </correction> certainly had the refresh rate and strobing tech for it, but you can't get it to work as it's not recognised as a 3D monitor
Really!? That's advertised on Asus' own website as being 3D capable though?
sorry i'm getting my screens mixed up! that model DOES support 3D vision. it was the Acer XB270HU which had necessary refresh rate and a strobing ULMB backlight but which doesn't support 3D Vision

I think that's about right IF it's not a QC disaster like the Acer. Even the original Swift went through a rough patch at the start so I'm told, so hopefully Asus have been paying attention to the anger directed at Acer over their complete lack of QC on the XB270HU. I was reading on another forum that someone went through 7 (yes, 7) of them before giving up, with each one having stuck/dead pixels and/or dirt behind the screen. Shocking.

I'm considering holding off buying the current TN model to see how this fares. Worth waiting you think?
It SHOULD be better in most ways... colour reproduction, viewing angles, screen coating... HOWEVER, slightly slower response time (4ms vs 1ms on the TN) and the TN has 3D, whereas this seems unlikely to be supported on the PG279Q. All in all, it depends what's most important to you in a monitor, and budget to a degree, as there will be a couple hundred quid in it most likely.

Thanks. I'm not sure I'm too fussed about 3D because I barely use it on my Benq now. I don't see response time being too much much of an issue as I don't play competitive fps.
What are the chances of the ips model bringing the cost of the TN down do you think?
I've always felt the ROG Swift was overpriced and has only held that price because it has no real competitors. The IPS offers more in some areas, but doesn't match it in others, so I although I expect a small drop in price, anyone expecting a bargain will be disappointed I am sure. At the end of the day, I think people will either want the TN for its speed and 3D, or the IPS for its superior colour and viewing angle performance. If you REALLY care about the latter (and especially if you have prior first-hand experience of the difference between the two), you won't consider the TN at a reduced price anyway, unless they were practically giving it away (which they won't of course).

I'd take a picture over speed any day. I've always had TN panels - are IPS panels generally far superior in terms of PQ? Can you see the IPS model being a lot more expensive?
'Far superior' is probably a subjective term. Some would say yes, and for colour sensitive work there is no sane professional on this planet who would choose TN over IPS. That said, when they are both calibrated properly, the difference isn't as extreme as it's made out to be. Colour shift IS a problem though, no question... even looking straight on at a TN panel you can see it, never-mind off to an angle. If you've always had TN, switching to another TN (and the Swift is supposed to be a good one), then you'd be more than happy I'm sure. But a few weeks with an IPS and then switching back to TN may be a different story! Most people who try moving from IPS to TN really don't get on with it very well.
No idea on price, but I suspect there will be a couple hundred quid in it, with the newer IPS being the more expensive one of course.
I wish we had more of a release date to go off. Even the month would do.

After 3 attempts and 3 failures im now looking at the PG278Q. But it would be silly to buy that if the PG279Q comes out in like a months time.
I cant stand this awful screen tear I now have after upgrading my rig. Using a Dell U2711 at the moment, great monitor but cant keep up anymore it seems.
The thought of waiting and having to deal with it until potentially almost xmas is not appealing lol
