I think if the biso supports CSM (Compatability support mode) that gets round that error.

If Windows.old exists and has the old copy of Windows in it there will be a rollback option somewhere.

That's correct, but it will 'clean' the whole HDD I think. It would be a complete ref-fprmat clean install of 8.1.
Not sure if you said you had found the OEM key, does the Windows.old folder look as though it has a complete copy of the previous Windows folder structure? Keyfinder (Load Hive menu) does let you load and read the prodoct key from a Windows folder, maybe that will show you the Win 8.1 key.
Update. A clean install of w8 with a downloaded ISO automatically picked up the key in the BIOS and activated. From there an upgraded install of w10 was straight forward.
