Youtubers asking for donations

There's usually a transitional phase between more "professional" you-tubers where it becomes more than just a hobby, but can potentially replace your main job. Maybe he's starting to reach that stage where he needs that last push to be able to produce content on a regular enough basis where the ad revenue will be able to fund his expenses (both personal and for their new found work).

Donations are optional. The viewer should never feel forced into donating, they have no obligation to. They're already providing enough as it is; just watch their content alone is more than enough.
 
I've given some donations to a couple of youtubers I watch quite a lot of. But honestly the few youtubers I have donated too have never specifically asked for it. I do it mainly due to the fact I enjoy the content and view a lot of their videos.

I just see it as giving a tip. I mean people tip waiters in restaurants for a "good service" why can that not be applied to youtubers for providing a "good service".

This, I've given about £40 over the past year, a 5er here and there for entertaining me for over an hour over a week. That to me, is the price I'd pay for a beer or 2 in a bar.

Time is money.

that's the only problem with youtubing streaming. if you want to be popular at some point if you want the special access *****
no one unless you lucky will get anywhere ranting or saying the game makers are doing this/that wrong.

look at current bf video supremeos all are in EAs own media paid group #Ronku and all publically whore themselves for the income so they get the content.inturn for views.

i guess if you doing it mainly for money then that's fine. its a business to you.

You're not obliged to pay, so don't complain given he's just letting people know that they can donate.

Even if it was a 'pay per view' channel, you can't complain as you don't have to pay to view it if you don't want to!

AdBlockers remove his revenue, so he can ask for what he likes, but it doesn't mean he'll be provided with it.
 
I don't mind giving a couple of quid a month on Patreon for content that I enjoy. There are only two Youtubers that I do this for, a gaming one and a horror movie reviewer that I find very entertaining and informative.
I don't see the problem with people asking for donations- nobody wants to work for free and some of them put a lot of work into their videos. If people don't want to donate then they won't. It's not like they're knocking on your door, you can even turn the video off if it upsets you that much.

I use a similar method to decide if I got value out of games, £1/hour and I'm happy, pay twenty quid for a game and if I get twenty hours out of it then it was value for money.

Skyrim was a bargain ;)

I subscribe for Star Citizen as it helps provide content I actually enjoy watching and reading, each to their own.

That was for his previous donation request (next level latency tests) which he met and exceeded. From that he bought 2X144hz monitors and equipment to test input lag with controllers and mice.

This request is just so he can make encode videos faster by upgrading his hardware.

Next he will want for us to pay for Hypertronic broadband. :rolleyes:

I do respect these EAUK members but asking people to pay for your hobby is going to far. Where do you draw the line? He isn't a Ronku stooge and I will give him that but if he wants to take things to the next level then maybe he should give up his day job. Anyway it's all voluntary but I won't give him a penny and I think there has been a bit of bad blood between him and I lately when I've criticized some of his videos for regurgitating what other youtubers say.
 
If you enjoy his channel and want to donate then go ahead...

If he wants to spend the money on hardware to give his subs a better experience, then yeah, OK but it is optional.

I watch a fair few YT's all of which I get immense enjoyment out of., I watch on my iPad so they get ad revenue from the channel. However I have never donated or been asked to.
If they did there are a couple who I would donate a few quid to... Broughy1322 being top of that tree. However he has never asked.... He did get quite emotional on his twitch channel when a couple of people donated though.... LOL
 
I’m of the opinion that they can have the best equipment out there but can still ask for donations, as long as they are happy if they don’t receive any. Some people, and it seems more common in twitch channels and their ‘fans’, get very toxic towards people who don’t.

Personally though if I was asking for money and someone queried why I’d have tried to explain it in a way that didn’t make me come across as a bit of an arse.

Just remember, as much as it’s your choice to donate and watch, its 100% his choice to make the video’s. It’s his choice he’s up until 3am, he can always stop or take longer between releasing content, and being condescending towards people who take an interest in your work is really a bad way to go about getting things.
 
If you like his work and want to donate then there is nothing wrong with that.

But if he's contacting people asking for donations my reaction would be to un-follow, i wouldn't even respond to him.

Its a hobby, a hobby he can share with other people who also get something out of it, it does involve work and his free time so there is nothing wrong with accepting donations, a "please donate" link or button somewhere is perfectly acceptable but to ask people directly for donations is wrong on so many levels.

I'm £3 per hour as I lose interest fast haha.

But yea, at my age, it's the best way to justify gaming.
 
I don't have a problem with people asking for donations. Its not as if I am forced to donate or anything.

Some people put shed loads of work into their videos and it really shows. If one of them asked for a donation for new gear to make the videos even better I could see myself donating £5 or something to them as a one off. Then again if I decide against it I'll still keep watching the videos.
 
Can't really blame him, I would love for someone to buy me a new 980ti/i7 Skylake build (HINT HINT MILLIONAIRES) ;)
