Hi

Im after a NAS to run as a plex server to my tv(via build in plex app) and possibly tab/phone. Im after a plug and play type that can stream 1080p content without issue.

Im not interested in building one and only need a couple of TB storage.

I currently have a plex server running on a rasberry pi2 but it cant handle higher bit rate stuff.

Have been looking at Synology but not sure which model i would need.

Thanks.

Do you have a budget?

I cannot recommend Synology enough, I have the DS1515+ and it is fantastic! It is amazing when coupled with Plex.

This is what I would go for given that you only want a small amount of storage although I would advise you put some larger drives in it as they will soon fill up, trust me.

was hoping around £200, but if it is worth it i will pay higher.

How easy is it to set up as a plex server on these?

if i set up as NAS Wired to Asus RT-N66U Router then wifi to devices, would there be any issues?

Thanks.

Personally I would go for the one I recommended as it is the 2015 model and has the best feature set.

Super super easy:

• Download Plex Server from their website selecting the ARM install (if you go for this NAS) https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-medi...lexMediaServer-0.9.12.11.1406-8403350-arm.spk

• Click on Package Center from within the NAS and select manual install, then locate the Plex Server download made previously and it will install.

• Once installed open Plex Media Server and select the folders you wish to use (Music, TV Shows, Movies etc.) and you are good to go.

The most important thing to do is to ensure that all your media conforms to the naming format that Plex uses to obtain media art, descriptions etc. A guide to this can be found here.

There should be no issues with that as long as your wireless network is fast enough to carry the bandwidth necessary to run the file. You may struggle for example running two 1080p streams simultaneously to two different devices at the same time but one 1080p should be ok.

ok, thanks for the info sounds easy then, we will probably only be streaming to one device at a time so wifi should be fine then.

No problem at all, feel free to message back here if you want any further help.

You have a good router so there is every chance you might be able to do a couple of 1080p streams at the same time and maybe even more than that.

A good quality 1080p stream will normally have a throughput around 3 MBps (Mega bytes per second) this includes video and audio and this would typically be a Blu Ray quality rip.

Given that your router has been benchmarked and can manage around 22 MBps (Mega bytes per second) from around 5 metres away, there is every chance you will be able to have two or possibly three high quality 1080p streams running at the same time assuming your receiving wireless equipment is capable of receiving data at that speed.

I hope this helps.

It does :) I just need to wait till payday now.

One last question, does it matter what format video is in? I have a mix of mkv and mp4, do you convert everything to one type or does it not matter?

You won't regret it, best piece of electronic hardware I have bought in years.

Yeah it will read MKV and MP4 formats no problem at all.

WOW! You are right, they support the ARM architecture which your NAS has but not the particular Annapurna CPU that you have.

I am shocked to find this out, for me that would be a deal breaker, have you considered swapping it for another version? Having read the Synology forums regarding this particular topic there are other Synology products in your price range that use Plex.

All I can do is apologise for the advice I should have spotted that.
