Facebook asking for proof of identity

So I didn't realise this was a thing. I have a facebook account but use an alter alias. In fact, I had another alias before this one but they asked me to change it as it was clearly not a real name, so I changed it to something else just as ludicrous. I don't want my real name on there, I want to remain anonymous, and a silly name is, well, more fun than "John Smith".

Anyhow, I logged in today to be greeted with another request to change my name as they suspect my current one is not genuine, except this time in order to change it I must submit a scan of my identification. Does anyone else think that is ludicrous?

Well I seldom use Facebook anyway, granted it comes useful to stalk beautiful people and I also like that I can access photos of relatives, particularly those who have now deceased, but I use it so little it makes no odds other than for that. I just don't understand how someone can have a profile for their pet dog and pretend to be that dog and reply to peoples messages, yet 'Mike Litoris' is completely unacceptable :) Needless to say, au revoir FB, you fascist pigs!

./TL: DR COOL STORY BRO

E: I should read back my posts before I hit submit - stalking beautiful people in the same sentence as dead relatives. Edgy! :p

Just put your name in irish into it. It'll not be close to your english name lol. Lots of kids at my university do it.

And if facebook confirm the ID is fraudulent they can pass this information on to authorities....

Not really wise to sugguest people break the law now is it.

it can't be illegal to own a fake id (a passport or driving license I could imagine being illegal of course, but there are other options), and using a website on the internets is hardly the same as buying age-restricted goods.

Buying and possessing fake id cards is not illegal (unless you infringe copyright and there are specific offences for driving licence and passport I believe). However, using these cards to misrepresent your age, status or any other aspect of your status may be illegal.

He isn't trying to get credit, buy drink under age, drive a car or enter the country with it lol.

Never understood why people want fake id's on FB? Unless they are up to no good?

I can think of dozens of professions where you may want a personal social media account but you don't want customers/clients to be able to find you.

In which case why bother with FB? ANd as said, just set your settings so people cant find you.

In my experience, most people with fake identities on FB are up to no good and potentially illegal things so no surprise that FB is trying to crack down on it.

And nobody is forcing you to join FB so if they wont let you join without id, its not the end of the world is it?

Why can't you use your real name but with all the correct privacy options enabled to block all your information to none friends?

Because the OP wants to either

A. Stalk women
B. Flirt/have an affair without his other half finding out
C. He's a criminal and wants to scam money out of lonely women
D. He wants to groom children
E. He wants to post points of view/pictures that he would be embarassed about letting his family and friends see

I cant think of any options so which one is it OP? :p

The fact you assume it can only something sinister says something about yourself Greebo ;)

As said, it's no big deal, I just delete the account. It's a shame not to have the fb connection with the dozen or so people I want on there, but it isn't the end of the world if I don't.

I guess I can always just pretend I'm someone's pet dog, that's acceptable.

It is strange to have to provide ID for social media, if they asked me for mine to 'verify' then that would be the end of my account too.

Wonder how long/if ever it becomes mandatory?
