It's a misleading headline really. (Like all the similar "massive fine for menial offence" headlines that come up once or twice a month).

What would the fine have been if he had just paid it? £50?
Just because he contented it and had to pay the full fine, court costs, victim surcharge, etc doesnt mean that's how much the original fine was

You must have two methods for stopping. For fixie, that is front brake + fixed wheel. For single-speed, that is a brake front and rear.

I still see a few brakeless fixie commuters though. I doubt the po-po would stop you for it but I can't see how it's a fun way of riding as you cannot push hard unless you have no fear of crashing/death!

Stopping hard on a fixie with no front brake means skidding, and if your chain snaps then you're boned.

I'm not sure what the point of riding brakeless fixed is, other than it looks cool. It'd be nice to have a brake for insurance even if you never use it!

As far as I know, they're all the same aside from bling factor.

I thought so.

Going for full overhaul, new rings, chain, cassette and possibly change the BB too as I have a minor creak occasionally which I think is the BB. I had thought about putting a Force front mech on as the older Red FD is known for flexing a bit and dropping the chain or being generally ****

Done maybe 14k since the BB was last changed, I can check when I change the rings I guess. It's only $50 for bearings and I have the tool.

I ride my track bike to the velodrome but it's only a couple of miles away and I take it very steadily. Even then, it scares the hell out of me and I've had to skid stop a couple of times!

I think it's the hipster factor of riding brakeless and those people that believe you enter a zen state where you are at one with the bike and can predict everything so you never lose momentum.

My jacket is killing me, I may as well wear a 5p shopping bag, the 2 little air holes would give me more ventilation!

Recommendations for a new Jacket for Autumn/Winter/Spring? Abitrary budget is £100, though I'd stretch to more if it's totes worth it.

Requirements:

1) Waterproof (or very water resistant)
2) breathable. no more boil-in-the-bag!
3) good visibility. I love the look of the proviz 360, but I tried one on and the fit is awful. Reflective bits and not black will do!
4) Warm but not too warm :p

I stand by my DHB EQ2.5, although it's not 'warm' - I just layer up under it in the winter. It's the most breathable (has vents around the body and big pit/bicep adjustable zipped vents), least boil in the bag (2.5 layers helps hugely) and mine, being last years high viz option (with some reflective detailing), it's the most visible for commuting. It might not be fully waterproof for several hours in a torrential downpour, but hardly any jacket will be.

It's vented enough to wear straight over a base/shot sleeve jersey in the ~16 degree spring showers we occasionally see, almost better than a packable (and it does just fit in a jersey pocket, but not really designed for it). I still carry a packable/gilet rather than it on leisure rides 'with a chance of showers'.

It doesn't need to measure resistance as that is a known power curve for your trainer (if you use the specified resistance setting). Cadence isn't required at all, neither is heart rate and your on screen speed is a calculation using your calculated power, weight and current gradient on the course.

Yeah but what I'm trying to say is - it uses cadence and speed to calculate that zpower, it's not just done from speed alone.

What do we think of patterned bar tape? I'm thinking of getting some black and blue for my pompino.

I bought some blue/black (almost camo like design) a while ago for my turbo bike and never used it, yours if you want it mate? Can take a pic when home.

I think I need to get a light with more range though... 5m or so in front was fine but suddenly seeing deer eyes light up at the side of the road was a little unsettling!

Quite heavy rain here for my commute home last night, my Volt400 was ok (most of my ride is on semi-lit roads) but I think I would want more than 400 lumen for fog& rain combo/longer commute in heavy rain. Although poor visibility from foggy glasses/rain on lenses caused me more problems than lack of light... I'm wearing a cap under my helmet to provide some protection, but I think it's increased the fogging (previously wore headbands/helmet covers).

I was actually going to mention that the rain was a lot less severe than I was expecting...

Thankfully 'dry' here this morning, typical last night at 5 (when I'm paid to!) it was clear... By the time I'd sorted all the c*ap out on my desk & got changed, around 5:30, it was hammering it down and got heavier!

Sportful Fiandre R&D Norain bibshorts were incredible, so much so my gloves, head & neoprene overshoes were the wettest parts of me. Chuffed is an understatement! They were perfect this morning too (6 degrees), where I've been wearing 'normal' bibshorts (with roubaix tights over them) other mornings. I'm going to keep both pairs (£70 for one pair from Evans', £50 for the second from Bikeinn) rather than sending 1 back as I can see me using them for commuting, which wasn't the original aim!:cool:

Anyone with much insight knowledge on Fizik saddles? I understand the 'SPINE' concept but I only see that as a determination of rider flexibility, not of suitable saddle shape which surely comes from sit bone width?

I'm a 'Snake' as I've got short legs and can easily touch the floor, limbered up with some flexibility exercises I can almost get my knuckles on the floor with straight legs. Now I'm after some comfort (not loads) so that places me on a Arione. Nothing about sit bone width?:)

Roady, have you had your sit bones measured? If not, I highly recommend you find an LBS that has a tool you can use. I went through 5 saddles before I had my sit bones measured. I never would have guessed that I had a wide ****. The measuring tool is basically a gel pad, which you sit on to imprint where your sit bones rest. Very easy and unintrusive

I've been using a 154mm saddle (BONTRAGER Inform RL Saddle), for around 2-3months now. I used to be plagued with saddle sores on my right side, but since the wider saddle, not a single problem.

If I had a turbo, I'd be having a go at this. With Lurpak obvs.

Speaking of which, turbos, who has what?

Been looking at the Elite Muin as it seems to be the quietest around at the moment? Want something to get on zwift with really, for when the weather is too awful to ride, but don't want to make enemies of my housemates/neighbours.

I'm using the last gen Elite turbo Muin without the speed sensor built in. It's really really quite, the loudest bit is the drivechain, I've got it set up in front of the TV and can watch at almost normal levels :) Got it because I'm in a flat atm and can't make too much noise.

The power ramp-up is great, can easily hit 300w in the small chainring. I've had it at 1k in the large chainring with plenty of rpm left to play with.

If you have a crank/pedal power meter then the speed sensor is redundant, trainerroad and swift work without them.

I've moved to the back door/under stairs cupboard in the kitchen. Door to my right and I can just about hold onto the cupboard door frame with my left hand to start off.

Just so happened I lost concentration when slowing down a bit.

Decided to go outside tonight for my usual jaunt to Clydebank, managed to get a KOM as I was drafting some guy who called me a *****. Probably wasn;t amused I was keeping up on the flat, I had my light pointed at the ground at this point, was being iffy about letting me get to the right hand lane to go round a roundabout so I ended up riding at his passenger door all the way round then side by side up to just under 30 for a few hundred yards until he pulled off to join the motorway. Not clever but I'm getting sick of people who try to pass joining roundabouts then panic brake as I take my line through it, people pulling out who don't realise you're going quite as fast etc.

Rant rant rant!

I hear ya! Doing that route in rush hour now as at least it's lit, but every single roundabout is the same. What is so hard for cars about backing off until I'm through the roundabout? Drives me ****ing nuts.

My other pet hate along there is the way the cycle lane will just disappear as you approach a junction, leaving you stranded in a left turning lane when you want to go straight on. What are the chances of cars even realising you're there, let alone allowing you to cross into the lane you need to be in? Can be a nightmare at times.

I am considering commuting to work, in time... now perhaps isn't the best time of year to do it. You're right (grudas) - the local idiots seem to have run out of all sense since the clocks changed. I get about 3 billion cars pulling out on me at junctions now (when I'm in my car with its portable sun headlights on), all lane discipline seems to have gone out of the window, especially on roundabouts... le sigh.

I just don't want to ride the 15 or so miles each way to work and back absolutely soaked, either from my own foistiness or rain/spray.

I'm thinking I need a proper commuter/touring bike with proper mudguards and pannier rack... but I'm also thinking this will weigh at least 14 metric tons.

Yeah..but why should you even have to login with anything just to browse the stuff they have for sale? Grabbing personal data/tracking in that way is really unacceptable to me.

I know it's not a big deal to click the 'login with facebook' or whatever button but it's enough of a reason for me to not be willing to give that company any money.

FWIW I agree. But everywhere seems to do it these days :(
