Giant Defy Advanced mudguards?

I've got a disc braked Defy Advanced 1 and I'd like to fit some mudguards to it for the winter, but unfortunately it hasn't got specific mounts, has anyone fitted mudguards to one?

I was looking at Crud RoadRacer Mk2 but can't seem to find any info about fitting them to a bike with disc brakes.

Bike mechanic question.

Would you use bearing retainer (loctite) on the cranks to the inner race of the bearing in the BB so that they can't rotate independently of each other and possibly cause creaking? Some websites recommend greasing the shaft here but I have read about using loctite which makes more sense to me.

Giant now do a set of guards speicifically for your bike. Speedshield Universal.

They work much better than cruds aswell :)

In what manner? I honestly can't fault them - great coverage, absolutely rock solid, only ~50g heavier than chromoplastics, easy to fit.. I actually can't think of a bad point, apart from the price.

They rub the calipers on the Defy 0 according to my LBS who were fitting some for a customer when I was there talking about my Speedshield guards.

Coverage and robustness of them is brilliant but I'm getting a bit of rattling. I reckon it's the rear guard buzzing against the underside of the caliper. I might try and find a way to isolate it and see if that helps.

I've previously used sticky back velcro on my frame to combat rubbing from things like frame mounted pumps, mudguards and even a small part where the bike rack at work touches my frame (although slightly too late as I already had a mark :( ).

The new Giant range of Speedshield guards have some designed specifically for the Defy Advanced (Discs) and another set designed for the normal Defy (Rims). I know because my LBS got their delivery in, I went to pickup a pair and they only had the Defy Advanced ones. They had to order me some normal Defy ones in, there was a conversation they had with their Giant rep who said the Advanced guards would not fit a normal Defy properly.

I have a normal Defy 1 and tried a set of them out, they're only slightly better than the 'old Giant Fenders' they replaced, which were horrific for noise, flexibility and banging the frame. I have previously used Crud's and would say noise from the Speedshields is the same, although they do have better coverage and clearance for 25mm.

My SKS Raceblade Longs are a much better fitting guard, with less flex, much less noise and similar coverage. I can't rate them enough! Although I'm unsure if they would be compatible with the Advanced as it doesn't have mountpoints and I don't think it has bridge points/holes?

Totally down to you, but in my opinion Giant's guards are terrible, they had the perfect opportunity to 'reinvent' them and still missed the mark. SKS deserve your money and in the long term you have a better guard.

A bit of a bleurgh ride in this morning - wet and windy for most of it. Tomorrow looks worse - yay!

Yup, utterly smegging ridiculous. Got soaked. My arms were even soaked through my waterproof jacket. Feet dry though as my dhb overshoes are brilliant. Glad I went for shorts though, less to get wet! All my gear is in the dryer in the changing rooms! Haha!

Dryer? Sounds ideal! I put my socks over the towel rail but the rest is just hanging out to dry off a bit. It should be just about unpleasantly damp by home time.

Oh you may find a similar fit issue with Cruds - they fit with their own 'P clip' type to the Seatstay with zip tie fittings on seat tube (you should be ok). But there are more zip ties to fasten them to caliper/brake mounts which you may find too high/non-existent on the Advanced...

I hang my wet cycle kit on the back of our server racks. The exhaust fans usually dry everything out by home time.:D

Hope you have a dehumidifier in there!

Thanks that would be great and sounds pretty close to what I am actually after building.

Went for a deda finishing kit from wiggle and used saddle, wheels and chainset from my old SS. It rides pretty nice on 26mm tyres, enough to take out the sting of London roads.

Did similar to Vonhelmet and had some mavic rims built up on some sealed hubs and they have been great, about 4 years of London commuting with no maintenance and they are still straight.

You can get the frame painted or powdercoated but adds to the cost.

Yeah. Its great, its like a big fridge looking thing within hanging racks. Just got to put up with other peoples stinky stuff in there at the same time though!

In my old office I used to hang my towel up on the fire escape push handle, it was brilliant. I also used to keep my bike in the office next to my desk, but now I've moved to another company I aren't really allowed.

That looks really good. Pretty damned close to what I am after. The only slight disappointment is that the FXE frames come only in black and I already have one black bike. I wanted a different colour! :)

At my place we have bike racks in the garage and you need to buzz the security people to get in, so I'm happy enough leaving my bike there. We have showers, but not so much in the way of drying facilities. I hang up my clobber on a hanger on the top of a door frame to dry/air during the day. There's a couple of coat stands for hanging towels from. They've recently had a clearout because there's was the leaning tower of towels forming on the benches - God knows how long they'd all been there, grim.
