Tough Guy

I really don't get the reply, it doesn't fit with anything above
"Has anybody done a Tough Man" and this response

Explain bro

Hes implying that OP doesn't want to do it and should run and hide. Thought that was pretty obvious.

sign up and yolo it.

my and my cousin once had a chat in a pub about doing an event such as this. a few pints later we'd signed up to Tough Mudder.

3 down and 1 booked for this year.

I've done a few similar - Tough Mudder and the Spartan races. And some other more fun Zombie runs. The most recent and, not coincidently, my last was around 16 miles long and early in the year. It was cold as **** - ice was in the water and we were in it entirely too much! You have to be relatively fit - I think the general rule of thumb is to be able to trail run 75% of the distance and you'll be ok as long as you're relatively strong in your upper body - and you should really prepare for the weather. As a skinny guy the cold was by far the hardest part for me. A guy I trained with gave some handy tips that were probably the difference between finishing and not. Basically neoprene. I had a wet suit vest like this:

And neoprene gloves with first two fingers cut off at the knuckle for grip. I also had some water resistant socks (which probably made no difference at all!) and other tight lycra layers. Dried fruit to eat on the way helps too. Also, I strongly suggest starting early. We were in one the last groups to start and the sun set on us half way through - then it got really hairy.

Likewise. I'm a serial non-competitor.

I don't think you need to be competitive to do these events. They're easy to get round and generally quite friendly with people helping you over obstacles. It's something different for a one off I suppose.

But...they're such a rip off.

Everytime I hear about these or the mud ones this instantly pops up in my head:

Does the course your doing have things like this?

^ That's a Tough Mudder exclusive :) They also have a similar one with electric wires that you have to crawl through - which is worse as they're hitting you right in the face and you're going much slower!

To be fair though Tough Guy is in a different league of difficulty. From my understanding at least. Mostly due to the time of year and the amount of water involved. I suspect there will be wading/swimming through rivers etc.

I suspect it depends entirely on the conditions on the day and where it's at. My friend did one and they were having to break ice for ppl to be able to get in the water - interspersed with running, more water, running, rinse and repeat.

Four of my freinds did this last year. One broke an ankle, one dislocated his knee and one suffered consussion. The other gave up half way round and went to the pub.

Think I'll give it a miss and stick to safe activities like snowboarding and mountain biking!

Looks pretty awesome from the organisers POV. £500,000 for 7000 people for 1 day at the cheapest rate, nearly £1M for the highest. I wonder what it actually costs to host one of these, I guess insurance might be interesting.

Tough guy has had the dangling electrified wires since about the start (which must be about 30+ years ago). If it's that then it's not a tough mudder "exclusive". :)
