Fined for taking kids on holiday..

let them take you to court and prove their case, I think they would find it difficult and it is a court who should decide if you have broken the law and impose a fine, not a council team.

Staggered that people think it's ok to take kids out of school for a holiday... So a holiday is more important than your childs education? Gimme a break. Should be forced to pay for the days your child takes off school for a jolly or a holiday.

Some parents these days... terrible sense of entitlement.

Are you for real?

When schools don't close because it's rained a bit, or teachers don't get in because they're "Snowed in" (because a couple of flakes fell).... then maybe I could support such fines.

This.I once drove 6 miles in heavy snow to school, to find the head standing outside telling all the parents the school was closed because no teachers had turned up.
Also, it's detrimental to your childs education to take them out in term time, but it's not detrimental to your childs education when the teachers go on strike...

I understand the point that taking kids out of term time should not be a de facto thing. But looking at the whole picture, attendance, performance and general situation of the holiday I think a black and white rule is unfair, untenable and all it will do is leave people to flaunt other rules. A bit of flexibility is called for.

I certainly had time off during term time, but my parents got the work in was missing and made sure I read, did the work I needed to do so I didn't completely miss out. And we're talking about what? A few days once in a blue moon. Hardly a big deal especially if your child is doing well and you are willing to continue the work out of school.

A bit of perspective here. The authoritarian black and white just is not the way to do things

+1

This. They had not missed one day of school before this "holiday" took place and the head master said it wasn't normal lessons for those days anyway and just fun activities like watching DVD's and painting etc and that is the reason he said it was ok.

I haven't read the whole thread, Locky, but one of the things I'd be angling towards is to get the headteacher to step in. After all, it was he that gave you permission, & you did ask if you could as well.

Some people need get off their high horses the op said it was for a wedding something that happens once in a blue moon and they've had 100% attendance upto the point

Why shouldn't kids be allowed out of school to attend weddings take it kids aren't allowed out to attend funerals aswell

I'd not pay it - don't bother wasting time with the phone monkeys at the local council if they're not being helpful - either get the head to get in touch with the LEA or let it go to court and show that you'd been given permission by the head.

It's exceedingly poor if the headmaster had already verbally said there would be no problem.

On the subject in general, my stance is simple, if the schools feel that it is detrimental in whatever way and the government have backed them on it with some 'rules' being applied, then I think its reasonable to expect people to follow those rules or pay the fine which is clearly a deterrent.

I would be happy if schools figured out how to accommodate parents taking their children out of school for reasonable periods of time during term time, I would certainly go on some 'cheaper' holidays, but only if it didn't affect their schooling in anyway.

This is such utter BS. It completely boils my blood.

The schools don't seem to give a **** about having an inset day for teacher training the first week back after the Summer holidays.

There is no significant impact on their education. Let them take you to Court and explain yourself to a judge IMHO. Hope common sense prevails.

I will just have to pay but I'm paying the max of the legal tender of each coin to be honest. just to be a ****

£1 - for any amount

50p - for any amount not exceeding £10

20p - for any amount not exceeding £10

10p - for any amount not exceeding £5

5p - for any amount not exceeding £5

Just paying in £1 coins would be annoying enough.
Plus prepared to be annoyed in return when they count it out slowly in front of you twice just to return the favour :(

I'm with you on this one though, I think that with 97% attendance, if your kids disappeared for the last 3 days of term, it shouldn't really have much fuss made at all but I would personally have been prepared to pay the 'fine' anyway.

When we're talking primary school, there's no way a week of school gives as much as a decent family holiday. Once you get to secondary school, missing work can be a little more of a problem.

There are 11 weeks of the year when a holiday can be taken and not impact "school time"...............................................

I think people should keep their kids in school during term time, that way the rest of us don't have kids spoiling our cheap relaxing holiday

Yes and at these times travel agents charge a premium price :)
As long as the kids are performing normally and catching up on the missed work I really can't see what the big issue is as they are not taking a full fortnight out of school.

You're problem is with poor parenting. Not taking holidays in term time :)
