Fined for taking kids on holiday..

My old boss used to do it as the holiday cost £3000 less by taking the kids away before the rest of them broke up. Well worth the fines to him

Yes and at these times travel agents charge a premium price :)
As long as the kids are performing normally and catching up on the missed work I really can't see what the big issue is as they are not taking a full fortnight out of school.

You're problem is with poor parenting. Not taking holidays in term time :)

Not the travel agents fault. Just supply and demand :p

Fair point, just means the government should either attempt to encourage cheaper out of term holidays from travel agents or not penalize parents for using their brains and going for a cheaper holiday that WONT cripple their childrens education :)

In that case, teachers should be able to take time off "outside peak periods" as well, as currently, any family that has a parent in the teaching profession are "locked in" to peak time holidays.

It's a pain that my wife can only have school holidays and we have to pay over the odds.

Disagree. You don't choose to put your kids through state education (outside of being a gypsy or putting them through private school, which for what we're arguing isn't going to be the case) whereas teachers have chosen their profession which means taking the good with the bad.

In primary school I do not see the issue of a week, if I take them out of school I will make sure they catch up on colouring in, cutting junk out and playing.

At court highlight Section 444 of the Education Act. At that point and provided your childs attendance is above 90% they have no case to answer to.

Search Jon Platt school fines. Everything has been checked legally according to articles plus if they do fine you they are breaching the law for the simple reason one party has been found no case but you have been expected to pay.

I'm going to be fighting two fines this academic year: A trip to Rome (historical, religious, cultural, art, language, cuisine and other learning) and also a family holiday next year. I plan to use Mr Platts defence if a fine is issued.

You should also note that there is very little understanding of the application of term time holiday fines as noted in the recent hearing about this.

Stand your ground OP and let us know the outcome

Staggered that people think it's ok to take kids out of school for a holiday... So a holiday is more important than your childs education? Gimme a break. Should be forced to pay for the days your child takes off school for a jolly or a holiday.

Some parents these days... terrible sense of entitlement.

Could you not argue that a hoilday could be extremely educational?

Experiencing language and culture? Exploring the geography?

A holiday outside of term time may be the only affordable way for some familys

Yeah, you're right - the cost of holidays is a total suprise to parents when thier kids reach school age..............................

Being a parent means taking the good with the bad.

Who judges if a holiday is acceptably "educational". A week in Spain with the kids dumped in school club while the parents get ******** wouldn't qualify I assume.

What's wrong with days out to the beach, country parks, city tours and museums etc? All of which are nigh on free besides travel expenses.

Haha - yeah - whatever.

Did you sleep through parents evening?

I don't remember this being during a holiday either. I'm sure the children didn't suffer at all for missing a days schooling.Or more.

Surely can't you just phone in and say your kiddo is sick with some contagious illness? How are they going to know any difference? Come back with a tan? :p They wouldn't be able to prove any which way.

I think it's an absolute awfully mandated 'rule'. My sister will be taking my niece out of school a week early next May to come to the States to visit her family, she's accepted the fine. My niece is 5!!!!! What on earth is she going to miss out on the week before half time?

I think people should keep their kids in school during term time, that way the rest of us don't have kids spoiling our cheap relaxing holiday

load of crap really as my daughter goes to a different school in a different area and her holiday started 1 week before my others broke up so most kids would have been off that week anyway.

It was my brothers wedding we are talking about too not some random holiday.

I did it the correct way and said the real reason amd got burned for it. I could have got away with 3 days sick bug if I lied and wish I did now.

Yes, you have to lie and feign an illness. Certainly not ideal, but better than getting fined 200 quid for them missing a couple of days colouring in or watching videos at school just before the summer holiday.

Are you saying this needs to be considered before having children?
Being a parent means taking the good with the bad.
Fair enough but being charged is a bit daft considering it may not impact on the kids education

Are you tarring us all with the same brush now as I'm sure most parents don't dump their kids in a club and get drunk on holiday.

Fine, tell an adult about to go abroad that their holiday has been changed for a trip to the seaside :D

Did you never go to Primary school as if you did you would know the last week is always filled with "busy work"
