What's your hospital food like?

I had a 2 week stay last year with atypical pneumonia.

To be fair most of the food wasn't bad but there was one meat dish which was like eating a leather sole. The nurse knew exactly which one it was when I mentioned it too :D.

The only other negative was the breakfast, cereal, biscuits or bread and jam, no toast or porridge!

I saw something that looked similar when I stood up off the throne..

In 3 week stay on hospital that was the best they offered.

Intersting discussion point, should patients have to pay for their meals in hospitals? As they would be buying food if they weren't ill.

Surely then quality would go up and NHS money problems would be helped as well

When I had my apendix removed about 6 years ago I got friends and family bring me food in as the food was nasty and when my missis was admitted for a week 3 years ago when she was pregnant I would take her food I wouldn't let a dog eat that cap what hospitals feed you

Depends on the hospital and NHS Trust really. Food at my local hospital is all cooked in-house and not by a contractor. Their restaurant is open to the public not just staff, patients and visitors, and you can get a good meal for not much money.

When I was in hospital (North Staffs) a few years back the one meal I had before checking myself out was superb, possibly the best food I've ever tasted.

I'm pretty sure a large part of that subjective assessment was due to the fact that I hadn't eaten anything at all for quite some time because I last ate the evening before the op and the op was delayed a bit. I probably went 16 hours with no food and no drink other than a small amount of water. Anything edible would have seemed very good food. As far as I can tell, a more objective assessment would have been that the food was quite good, as good as could be expected for meals produced on a fairly large scale with a fairly limited budget.

The drugs really were superb, though. The anaesthetic was like a magic teleportation spell - from my point of view I instantaneously moved from one place to a different place and a different time. The morphine they gave me was glorious. Everything was so wonderful that the nurse asking me if I was OK was the funniest thing that had ever happened in the universe. I seem to react very well to opiates.

The hospital where I work at has a subsidised canteen that staff, visitors and service users can use. I would say as good as, or better than pub food. On any given day... usually 4 meat options and 2 veggie options, plus 12" subs, jackets and salads. The kitchen there also provide the same meals for inpatients. We've got it good here :-)

Many of our staff go to County and when they return they keep harking on about how good the food is.
All I want is access to their IT systems without going through multiple County contacts.

Been admitted to Luton hospital for a few days due to kidney infection but I think the.food will do more harm then good lol.

I would not feed it to.my cats and custard was pretty much lumpy slop.

I was in Bedford hospital for a operation few years ago now and the food was very good it's making my stay here harder knowing Bedford got the good foods lol.

Sorry rant over peace out.

Man I hate lumpy cats in my custard.

I had hospital food at the Walsgrave in Coventry for 6 months 7 years ago. I really liked it. And in the canteen I used to have people come visit me just because the canteen food was lush lol.

Apparently it's gone downhill a bit though.

Guy on the bed next to me used to order Chinese in because he didn't like the food!! lol

Hospital food here has won national awards.

After some budget cuts it's not as good as it was but quite honestly I know of a lot of people that if they don't have time to cook they pop into hospital canteen and buy a takeaway beef stroganoff or whatever dishes are available that day (4 meat and 2 veggie).

Plus always beer battered fish and chips on a Friday with mushy peas for £3.75 (free for patients of course).

Edited to say that my wife was recently in hospital and the nurses would tell her to order two meals and I could eat for free! Trifle was to die for (not literally).

I cannot actually eat solid food any more but of the two hospitals that I have been a patient in recently the quality has been pretty good I am reliably informed but portion size leaves a lot to be desired.

There's an M&S Simply Food inside my local hospital. That probably tells you something about the quality of the hospital food. :p

The food at my hospital is not far off plane food. Not amazing but not bad.

They do have an on site cafe though which is great. It is like a English caff serving all sorts of standard munch all day. The breakfasts are huge and greasy (2 of everything, hash-browns, eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, toast etc) which is great but obviously they have healthier options for those that want to write a self gratifying facebook status.

I eat from there quite a bit since the fishing lakes i bailiff for is a few hundred yards away. Real handy to be able to grab a full English in a takeaway box after a cold night of catching!

They also do a butterscotch tart which is amazing!

It is like old style school dinners but on tasty steroids. Still looks like crap though.
