Just bought? as in recently?

The only way to buy Horizons is from the FD website, it is quite literally the only option.

So I bought ED from steam a short while ago during the sales so grabbed it for £10.

Now I look on the Froutier website, there is a beta and a preorder package for Horizons. Both suggest I get £10 off because I am an existing owner.

So I'm guessing the smart thing to do is buy the preorder for £39.99 - £10 and just wait the 5 days until it unlocks?

Yeh, that would be the smart thing, £10 for a few days of beta is only for those who really really want to play with Horizons content right now lol :)

The moment I approached his dropped cargo (Palladium) and opened the cargo-scoop three blips appeared on my scanner close enough that I could've spat at them and I was insta-popped.
That's the trap being sprung.
Used to happen a lot in early access...

Not even in theory, you cannot do it in game, though what can and has happened is community groups having FD put them into the game as factions and a couple (I think) of stations have been constructed off the back of community desires.
The theory being that no one player would ever be rich enough, but a group who formed a faction (or joined one) that got large enough still could, as above, if they pooled enough resources.
Either way, it can be player-influenced. Just not by any one.

Had a bit of a surreal moment tonight, having reset my beta save I had been messing around out of Baker's Prospect and running a couple of planet based missions, on my way back to call it quits for the night I was coming into the starport when I spotted a teeny tiny POI, while investigating I noticed an odd looking glowing light thing, came in lower and realised it was a couple of fellow Commanders in their SRV's so I landed (there may have been a fair bit of bouncing in my excitement) and said hello! I grabbed a quick clip of them after I took off again :)

1080p version will take a while to process.

Not sure where they are but that would most certainly stop them from firing, deploy hardpoints and use the external cam to have a look, or look where they are in outfitting :)

First reaction:

There's an external cam?!?

Second reaction:

Great idea, thanks! (And I need to work out how to use the external cam!)

I think the final realisation it was due to hardpoint placement was when I was trying to figure out why I couldn't reproduce the problem when firing without actually in a fight - lasers working fine then. I was trying to think what the difference was, and it occurred that I was only firing straight forward.

Anyway, now that's sorted out, I have a new question.

What weapon combos do people use and find good? I was on all lasers before I swapped one out for a cannon because I wrongly thought I had a power issue.

But actually, maybe this setup is quite good. Whittle the shields down with the lasers, get in close so they can't dodge, then the individual cannon hits do a lot of damage (and they look awesome when they hit, you can see them punching holes in the enemy.)

Go into options and assign a key to the external cam (can't think what it is called off the top of my head). It is one of the best additions added for screenies and a must for showing off.

Edit:

It is called Classified camera toggle. When in that mode, you can't fire or move but your controls spin the camera around.

Isnt the external cam more a debug tool? I dunno why FD dont put in proper external cam placements, missile cam, mine cam, probe cam etc etc.

@Dano

How tempted were you to to press the trigger button? :p Did you not think about doing a flyby? (top gun style)

A searchlight type light would come in handy there as well.

They're very resistant quoting unfair advantages over those using cockpit view, something that after considering for a while I think they are wrong on, the scanner and target holo being incredibly powerful that external views are not going to make much difference.

I was quite tempted to start shooting but my better nature got the upper hand :D No target locking on SRV's either so it would have been quite difficult, did several flybys before taking the clip :) I had the ship lights on but they're pretty weak on the sidewinder sadly.

Beam Lasers and Multi-Cannons, mostly.
I blaze them with Beams to drop the shields, then add in the MCs. However, as the Beams heat up, I switch to just MC for a bit, then bring them back in when ready - Annihilates the hull!!

Beam Lasers burn pretty patterns across the hull, by the way!

It started that way but FD decided to officially let us have it, so we can make a million Wallpapers for ourselves with it!

Generally, cams on things that are not your ship endanger you. Even in the Debug cam, you have no control over your ship and in some cases, you could get utterly blatted before you can switch back and gain control quick enough to avoid it.
External cam - More of a Freelancer thing, really. StarCit are taking a similar approach for teh same reasons, in that you can still fly the ship... but you won't really be able to aim.

For many players, the scanner takes a while of getting used to, whereas a wider field of view and a crosshair is basic arcade combat. These are not arcade games.
I suspect they also want to avoid being compared to Star Conflict or Freelancer in any way.

Who said anything about crosshairs? Just external views fullstop, not external combat views.

Generally the people who want external-view flight, so they can fight with a wider angle, or in some cases an all-round view of their ship... which *would* give an unfair advantage .

What, you mean like just the fixed angles SC/Arena Commander has?

I was thinking more along the lines of flyby and a more fluid version of what we have now a bit like the F2 and F3 camera's from the original IL2 series.

Ahhhhhh, I thought you were talking about playing from the rear-view perspective!!

I think I know what you mean - Beauty shot views? Yeah, that sort of thing could be very cool and easier to get the good shots.
Still likely to get you surprise-killed though, unless you can actually fly in those views?

Guys, I thought I would do a community goal as I haven't done one in forever, so went to the Kausalya system, signed up, joined a faction, got 1.5Mill in creds and went back to the station to hand them in. Only option I could see was the bonds, so handed in there but it didn't register on the main CG.... Did I miss something?

I haven't participated in a CG for a long time, but I seem to remember it sometimes taking a while to register contributions; tried the old log out and back in?
