If you come to the game full of self entitlement and attitude (typical elite or sc forum user)
Typical 'Gamer', in my experience... at least from the last 15 years.
I've seen that type on all manner of game forums, from Tomb Raider to Freelancer, to CoD, to people on Farcebook playing Farmville!!
But I'm just skeptical as I've never really liked the thought of space games as it comes across to me as slow and boring :/
Depends what you like in a game.
There is a slow bit in the flying around from place to place. You have to build speed and slow down, bearing in mind you're travelling many times the speed of light... no different to braking in a car.
There are boring bits, such as figuring out which weapons and equipment are the best balance, or which commodities will sell best along your intended routes... no different to speccing up a PC, I suppose.
Then there are the faster bits, such as dropping in on a warzone and having forty-odd enemy ships blitzed across your scanner, as you duck and dive to avoid the bigger targets and hone in on the ones you can cope with, all while dodging the nasty little beggars that are trying to blatt you, while also managing your power distribution, watch your shields, keep your temperatures down and so on.
In fact, I would liken it to learning to drive - Initially there is SOOOOOO much to think about and it's a real challenge. But once you get comfortable, it's very enjoyable... and once you get good, it's about being good and feeling good and just hooning around the galaxy being awesome... right up until you get just a touch complacent and then some NPC puts you firmly back in your place, whereupon you find a new nemesis and a new challenge!
All in all, it's a very hands-on game, pretty much like a space sim, but still intended as fun rather than complete realism.
Yet the moment you get anywhere near scooping it up two or three ships appear right on top of you and destroy you before you can even see what, or who, they are?
This is why you leave it a few moments, to see who drops in.
Pirates are lovable rogues, which means they usually have friends... That's often who's got you, if not the cops catching you in the act of stealing cargo!
Lesson: Watch the top-left comms panel (because NPCs usually warn you just before they attack), keep your eyes on the scanner and your ears pinned for the sound of a ship dropping out of Frame Shift!
