Anyone Using an Asus DSL-AC68U

Hi guys,

I bought this router a few days ago. I have BT Infinity 2 and a home hub 5. My downstream speed was 79999 kbps with the home hub. On the Asus router it's only 73998 kbps. I have tried testing various DSL settings in router administration but the speed doesn't get any higher. Do I just need to wait a week or two for the speed to increase?

Thanks :)

Surely you did at least skim read the thread before posting? The DSL range has modem issues, they have not been fixed despite multiple firmware releases. Either drop back to a BTO based modem and choose to use the router without the internal modem, or flog it and buy the non DSL version/something else.

Does this modem/router only play nice if you have a short line?
As VDSL lines all tend to be short due to the nature of the solution I assume you are talking about ADSL lines.

The main criticism of this device is the number of CRC errors it registers. In the real world I've never found that be an issue which impacted line speed or stability.

In the early days of it's release this device got a bad reputation and despite Asus working hard to fix those problems it's a reputation that has stuck.

I've used this device for over a year, mainly on ADSL and now on VDSL. It does not deserve its reputation.

Unlike many other manufacturers Asus continue to improve and bug fix the firmware, it is a much better device than it was a year ago.

It's not perfect, it still has it's quirks but it also has it's major plus points, WiFi performance being being top of that list. It has a lot of modem options to fine tune/tweak your connection. If you are looking to maximise throughput on a long line they may be useful.

People will tell you that there are better devices out there, yet when you look at those devices you will see as much moaning about their problems as there was about this one.

It's almost impossible to say whether this device will work well with your line. I can only suggest that if you decide to buy one you get it from somewhere that takes returns. Try it out, give it a chance".

Unfortunately the guy is lucky to have a stable connection however what he states is not what the majority of purchasers of this flawed product experience and removed from the reality of how sensitive the modem side is...

my only issue with the device was the loss of sync speed and not removing higher levels of interleaving.
Errors weren't too bad but it would sync approx 6MB less than the HG612.

What is the "preferred" modem in terms of stability and throughput? Looking to get something cheap / second hand potentially
Thanks

AS I'm needing a new router to replace the useless wifi on my HH5, Can I use the HH as a modem and this as a wifi router, or would something else be better?

I was stoked reading reviews of the device until I wandered here and saw the modem issues :(

If you don't already have this router, and are looking to run a router alongside a BTOR modem or HomeHub, then you are better looking at the RT- versions and not the DSL- (or a different brand). The integrated (V)DSL modem is the attraction on these, so if you need to use a separate modem (likey that you will) then you may as well go a different way.

If you want an "all-in-one" solution then teh Netgear and TP-Link models seem to fare better. If you do go for one of these (DSL-AC68U) make sure it is from somewhere you can return it easily. You'll know within a couple of days is this is going to work well for you. Odds are it won't.

This is truly appalling. I read so many reviews and this seemed like top dog. How wrong was I.

Need to come back to Overclockers more often.

I have tried relentlessly all night to get it to work. Not once has it connected. Absolutely terrible. I even tried to by-pass the modem and use the BT one. Would not take it. Tried to upgrade Firmware from downloaded file. Wouldn't take it.

Hopefully Curry's will take it back.

Can anyone recommend a router? Preferably with an in-built modem? I am on fibre.

I am currently looking at these:
TP Link VR900 Archer 1900Mbps VDSL/ADSLAC WiFi Router
TP Link Archer D9 AC1900 WiFi Gigabit ADSL2/2+ Router
TP-Link Archer C7 Wireless Dual Band AC1750 Gigabit Router (Have a BT modem)
Netgear Nighthawk R7000
Netgear D6200 WiFi Dual Band Gigabit Modem Router

Many thanks

Don't get confused between the r7000 and d7000 for netgear. rR varients only have router function. D has modem and router. I'm fairly happy with D7000. Not had any issues with it and held the connection solid. Syncs around the same as my hg612 and 6Mbps higher than the Asus dsl-ac68u.
I'm waiting for the new billion 8900 to appear which is meant to be this month or next just purely to see what extra functionality it has over the netgear.

You probably have some settings wrong, what is your isp?

by the way
archer C7 / R7000 are routers only (needs an other modem to work)
D6200 / Archer D9 are adsl modems only & will not work with fibre/vdsl
so only other option the V900 (or D7000)

Hi all, from Googling this seems to be the best and most informative thread on the Asus AC68U modem so I hope someone can offer some advice.

I'm on SKY ADSL and have recently bought the Asus DSL-AC68U as it seems future proof (I'm expected to get fibre around Dec 2016).

Initially I had some problems connecting however after firmware updates I'm connected successfully. I am loving this modem/router as it's one of the best I have owned in terms of performance and features (previous was Netgear AC1200).

I am having 2 issues with this modem:
1) Disconnections - I get around average of 1-2 disconnections a day. I've tried playing around with DSL Settings by disabling DLA and setting Stability Adjustment (ADSL) to 2 dB but doesn't seem to make much difference. I am not really sure what settings I should choose. I've never had any disconnection issues on Netgear.

2) Sync speed - looking at the DSL log my sync speed is significantly lower at around 5MBps whereas the Netgear used to sync closer to 6MBps. I am wondering if this can be improved? Definitely not a hardware/line issue as I can still sync at 6 if I swap back to Netgear modem and sync close to 7 if on Sky modem. I did thought of using the Sky modem just for WAN but wondering if that is a good idea as it might mean some features on the ASUS such as QoS/Traffic analyser won't work?

When disconnections occurs ... try to note ... if the dsl uptime (system log>dsl log) resets to 0 hr,0min,0sec or still caries on counting?

Carries on counting, I've had a disconnect around 30 mins ago but the counter is showing as online for 15hours+

I've dug out my original netgear Sky router and trying to configure it to use as internet source but somehow the router webpage keeps timing out lol :P

I wish I have fibre :( Main exchange is enabled but not my cabinet. According to my local council it is due Dec 16 assuming no delays.

The ASUS DSL-AC68U sucks on ADSL, it is marginally better on VDSL with it working fine for some people but majority of lines have issues with it.

Also ESNP is for VDSL not ADSL lines.

I would buy something else, Netgear D6400, D7000, numerous Billion VDSL Routers and other manufacturers all have better stability than the ASUS when it comes to both ADSL and VDSL lines.
