Dell S2716DG - Dells first G-sync

I dont know if its just me ? but since having this monitor my PC seems more stable i have not had one driver crash or any game issues.. i am using the latest drivers btw.

Or maybe its the G-sync effect :o

Latest assassins creed game is silky smooth on this monitor loving it :D

It's just a beautiful monitor!

Is anyone else having really bad colour banding issues? Mainly on darker colours, but I'm getting really noticable banding.. has anyone returned one recently? If so, has it cost you anything? Thanks in advance

Mine has been fine, but I did read a post somewhere about cables picking up noise. Might be worth just checking and carefully moving the monitor cable to see if it helps or the banding changes, nothing to lose.

Yeah, I have pretty bad banding in certain circumstances. In many games its unnoticeable but there are a few culprits where the banding of dark shades sticks out like a sore thumb.

In Batman Arkham Knight I get banding in dark scenes where there are a lot of dark alpha effects like smoke blending with shadows. In GTAV the sky box at night shows obvious banding between different shades of dark greys.

I haven't really come across banding of light shades. I tried various gamma values in NCP and short of dramatically crushing the gamma it has no great determinable effect.

I guess it's just a fact of life with this monitor.

under those scenarios it is noticeable.
Even in pCars when you play at night on a heavy cloud coverage track it is noticeable. I've tried everything but it is still there even using a 3dlut

If you really want the banding to make you break down and cry, try playing Never Alone. That game has awful banding on almost every screen I've tested it on, including a 12bpc Sony VA tv and even on an Nvidia Shield's AMOLED screen. On the Dell its awful.

I'm somewhat peeved that the reviews didn't pick up on the issue as had I known that banding was a problem I probably wouldn't have bought the screen. However, to be fair, it doesn't manifest in every game and even in those games it does show up in its limited to certain scenarios. However, it's there and its a live issue.

On the whole the S2716DG is a solid gaming monitor and is attractively priced - when on sale - compared to the recent IPS counterparts. You can add banding to the list of drawbacks, though.

After reading the above posts regarding the banding, I tried altering my settings to see if I could get it. I used the background on steam, and altered my NCP controls and found I could get banding by altering Gama and brightness and turning them up, but where I normally have it there is none evident.
It might be no good for you guys, but I have my brightness at 25%, and Gama 0.85, contrast 50%, and digital vibrancy at 60%.
It seems great for me playing games and desktop, but I have come from a 7 year old Samsung 24 inch Syncmaster, and this monitor makes the old one look, well, old and dull :0)

It would be really unlucky if your next 2 where in any way duff

They are better than the 1st 1 i had , they all do have slight cloudy banding but can only see this at night and a complete black back ground or at boot up .

my only problem is when the monitors go to sleep after a certain time that when they wake up when i move the mouse is that only 1 screen comes on and is a pain to get all back on , in some instances none of them will come back on ..when only 1 monitor comes on it goes back to sli (maximize 3D performance) and i ave to do the whole process again . this all then works , but if i mess with bezel correction all 3 monitors go blank .

Ive asked this question on another thread but to nobody knows whats going on . might ring overclockers and ask one of there guru's .

but when it works it works and my 2x980ti runs the resolution 7680x1440p brilliantly on most games on max setttings , Project cars i get over 100+ fps on max settings even with AA on and ultra grass .

only game to bring it to its knees is Crysis 3 where i get about 40-80 depending on settings , i get 80 if i take off AA and tone down a few settings like water and post processing down a notch . what an experience though . got dizzy at first when using them for first time , but the thing i can do now i.e play football manager in windowed mode and still browse the net and do other things on the other 2 screens .

just need to get a good bracket now . as im very limited to where i want the screens as the right hand is way to much inwards and just a tad on the left , as i only want a slight curve and not a big one .

It's present in everything more or less, ranging from 4K videos, to games, all the way down to the colour of the blue-black background you get when in a Skype call :/

It's just the limitation of the panel I reckon. For example I was just playing BF4 on the Zavod Graveyard night map and I could see a lot of banding generally everywhere. :(
PCM2 or Badass can you shed any light on this? I have mine profiled as this:

Black level = 0.1416 cd/m^2
50% level = 25.26 cd/m^2
White level = 117.53 cd/m^2
Aprox. gamma = 2.22
Contrast ratio = 830:1
White chromaticity coordinates 0.3128, 0.3294
White Correlated Color Temperature = 6498K, DE 2K to locus = 4.8
White Correlated Daylight Temperature = 6500K, DE 2K to locus = 0.1
White Visual Color Temperature = 6326K, DE 2K to locus = 4.6
White Visual Daylight Temperature = 6495K, DE 2K to locus = 0.1

I created a 3D LUT from that and the banding is still prevalent in dark areas in gaming or movies.

In many cases the banding is actually present in the source material (i.e. game). That is particularly the case for fog or smoke, such as in Zavod Graveyard Shift. It's far less computationally expensive to render scenes in such a way that causes fairly abrupt brightness steps (i.e. banding) than to have a completely smooth transition, regardless of how good the monitor is. This can sometimes be hidden by having elevated gamma and is also exacerbated by gamma that is too low.

The native gamma of the S2716DG is particularly low and is obviously corrected in the centre of the screen if you profile. Depending on how extensive the adjustments are elsewhere, this correction can actually exacerbate banding in fact. Additionally, it is only correct at the centre of the screen, and as above 'correct' gamma could simply reveal inherent problems with the game itself. You may notice that the banding is less obvious towards the top of the screen?
