NEST thermostats

I know this is a Nest thread, but what are people's opinion on the 3rd gen Nest vs 2nd gen Hive?

Seesm they're generally much of a muchness?

much of a muchness from my understanding.

they both work with other things, they both control hot water and heating.

i guess it just comes down to personal preference. i went for the nest but in reality i dont use it for anything different to what one half its cost would do (apart from the phone control as i use that a lot)

Also my mate who has a Hive regrets not going for Nest as the Hive is basically not smart. It's just a internet connected dumb pre-programmed thermostat. The Nest however learns

2 and 3 on the nest

top left of page 22

L & N on boiler goes to L & N on nest

(page 26)

3 on boiler goes to 2 on Nest
1 on boiler goes to 3 on Nest

It looks like you just need to wire 1 and 3 (page 24) on the boiler to erm 1 and 3 on the Nest. Get a second opinion though.

cheers gents - will take another look. Had to replace the main board last week on the boiler so fairly confident I could fit one myself but with no existing thermostat I would need to run 2 core flex from the boiler to the nest. I would need to consider where I locate that i guess.

Then I would just disconnect the existing timer/programer etc???

Have you looked at tado? I wanted to go down the Nest route as I already have two Nest smoke alarms but they're pretty expensive in comparison to Tado.

Just looked on the Tado website and it's £199 to buy plus £50 for the install, which is the same as Nest and Hive. Has the price changed?

Email them/call them. There is always some kind of offer on. Tado is much easier to install yourself too as it uses mains voltage rather than stepping down like Nest, so I wouldn't bother paying for an installation.

Ok thanks - will check out the Tado and see what deals/offers they have.

buy some 5 core flex from screwfix. use 4 wires (not the earth wire)

thats how ive done mine, i was in the same boat with no existing thermostat.

Ive got mine on the stand on a shelf in the lounge, it doesnt look to bad to be honest but when i redo the lounge ill wall mount it. Really impressed with it so far

So last week the nest stopped coming out of auto-away away again so I reset it again.

Yesterday it turned on 6 hours early and today it didn't turn on at all.

This really is junk.

Hi all,

Been reading about these tonight and came across this thread.

Moved into our new place back in November and already had a wireless thermostat, a Salus RT501RF(TX). The boiler is a Main Eco Elite which seems to have had the timer clock removed and the receiver for the stat installed to replace:

Anyone replaced one in a similar setup?

That boiler is similar to mine. Behind that large round part will be the wireless receiver for the thermostat that your holding. I removed that which is plugged into a sort of four port plug. Two ports are 240v and the other two are the call for heat.

I'll need to look at the manual again but in any case that boiler should be fine.

In case you have not had a combi boiler before I would also up your pressure a bit - should be closer to 2 psi than 1

Thanks guys I will try to find the manual online today and have a look.

As for the pressure it is my first combi and I bled some radiators the other morning and it dropped down to topped it up to there as it was in the middle of the big green bit :) I will up it a little tonight. Thanks for that

What's the battery life on the thermostat like?

I'm under the impression it can be taken off the wall and recharged with the USB cable?
