Windows 10

If an account has a password then other users should not be able to view the contents of that account if their account is just a standard user surely.

Otherwise just set permissions to those document folders to your user account only from the parent folder properties dialogue.

Depends how locked down the PC is. If either the boot device can be changed, or the case can be opened, then the files on the local disk are /not/ secure.

Booting Linux will let you view any files that aren't encrypted, since only Windows cares about permissions.

If you can take the case apart then you can reset the BIOS, or simply remove the hard disk.

Extreme, I know, but if you are serious about security, you use encryption.

What about winrar encryption but it must be possibly broken by now as its old enough to brute force but relative to ease of use I'd call that pretty secure

Hi guys

Sorry if this question has already been addressed in the thread

I'm running windows 10 on my PC, but I'm having problems when gaming. The system minimizes the game back to desktop every 20 mins or so with no explanation.

I have tried all the tips in this thread here but it hasn't made any difference so far

The games are not running through steam so I don't think that's the problem and when it does minimize there are no desktop notifications etc on the desktop (it also plays that annoying windows chime)

Can anyone help?

Does anybody bother with Intel RST software or the Inf drivers for Windows 10?

Rapid storage drivers make a big difference in regards to random read/write benchmarks on my SSD.

I don't bother with software, just the driver.

The chipset inf drivers aren't needed as long as you don't have any unrecognised devices.

Samsung Magician running?

Virus scanner or anything like that have a background task kicking in?

No Samsung app's are running that I can tell. Problem is when it happens, as I only have one screen, I cant see what has caused it. If I had 2 screens I could have the windows running services or the error logs open and I might be able to catch it.

I have Intel SSD Toolbox installed because it relays some useful SSD info and has utilities built in to diagnose any faults or change settings. Small util too, so no-brainer really.

Ah, I also got that issue too!

I was mostly playing Dawn of War. Either Dark Crusade or SoulStorm mostly, but it also did it with Company of Heroes and I have just recently gone back to 8.1 for unrelated reasons, but it has now stopped.

I AM running my games through STEAM however, but, I have NOT had to do a fresh install of these games in so long, I just run them and they update DirectX files and they just run.

Alright, as there are now hints that a few games I'm getting soon will be using DX12, I decided to re-upgrade to 10 (I previously upgraded, then rolled back after raging at file/folder permissions over LAN and a couple other things.

I've had a good old fiddle, and also had a play with Windows permissions... I'm now treating it like a domain environment. The default % shares don't work in 10, bypassing them with a DIY fix breaks other things. So I've applied a share to the root of my internal drives and given an admin account full rights to those drives. This fixes root access permissions. I've created a public read only account which I will set on LAN machines so they can access the shares they are entitled to since Win10 now must have a username/pass set from a LAN machine when browsing to \\machinename even if it's to access a folder where "Everyone" has read access to.

So permissions are sorted and I can even access shares now from any non Windows device.

The Startup folder in the start menu not loading a few software due to them not being elevation aware I've sorted by copying those shortcuts I can quickly load from the taskbar. I simply mass load those 4 pieces of software if I ever have to restart.

Bit of faff, but I think I've got there at last...

Why not use task scheduler to run the software at log on?

Well.... just spent all morning fixing my PC, nothing changed last night other than installing the division beta and uplay.

Turned it on to find it running really sluggish, restarted it, still sluggish (lock/welcome screen took forever to respond) so once I got in, I started to run malwarebytes and then windows explorer stopped responding thus had to do a hard reset and then I got the blue screen with BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO and infinite boot loops/black screens etc. I couldn't even get into safe mode.

Tried the suggested fixes in this:

Didn't work so I put my old W8.1 OS drive back in to back up all files on this broken W10 install and getting ready for a fresh W8.1 install..... to cut a long story short, something was different, tried the above video again and it worked.... No idea what caused this issue  First time that I have ever had so much trouble with my PC...

EDIT:

Personally I haven't bothered with the intel rapid storage drivers.

1. Bitlocker (or other encryption)
2. Make sure they don't have admin accounts (if using whole disk encryption)
3. Make sure they don't have read permissions to your files/folders.

If you aren't using encryption, then they can see your files any time they like. If they have admin accounts, they can bypass permissions.

If everyone /has/ to have admin accounts, then you need to manually encrypt your sensitive files with a password/key. This works differently to whole disk encryption (aka Bitlocker), so even you need to enter your password every time you access those files. A bit like logging onto a website.

Put your porn somewhere other than on the PC?

Ive just set the set permissions simple as that,No porn on this pc im afarid guys:(:D

I have two other accounts on here and i thought they wouldn't able to see as they are not admin but they can.

Also, one extremely annoying issue with windows 10 is wireless 5GHZ seems to be buggy regardless of adapter. It keeps disconnecting all the time, at first it was fine but then disconnects and re-connects started happening every few seconds, minutes so I have tried everything I can think of to making sure the power management feature is off, USB selective mode disabled to uninstalling/reinstalling drivers various ways but it doesn't matter, it might be fine for a few days and then it happens again

Adapter is TP-LINK Archer T4UH AC1200.

Many people reporting the same across the internet but no guaranteed fix, I even tried the "realtek" drivers built in to windows but nope :(

If it wasn't for dx 12, I would be back on W8.1 by now, aside from slightly nicer UI "overall", w10 has just been a disaster for me lately....

Noticed that spybot-anti beacon has been using 25-30% CPU usage too. It is down to avira blocking access to the host files. I have uninstalled spybot for now.

Sod SpyBot, they sold out a while back.

MalwareBytes and SUPERAntiSpyware are the best manual run 2nd opinions to keep on your monthly maintenance regime folder.

Oh? Nobody else has a maintenance regime?

You people make me sick.

:D

I try to keep to a monthly maintenance regime but I never stick to it :p :o :(

Yeah I read some unsettling posts over on their forums about their "practices"...... What I was using was just something to disable all the privacy stuff in windows 10, not malware/virus scanners. Needless to say though, I feel safer with it of my system now, I trust microsoft with my details more than them :p

I have malwarebytes along with hitmanpro installed for manual scans every now and then and avira running in the background, I am just using windows firewall. Do you just have windows defender as your real time scanner then?
