Free Star Citizen access until Friday!

I might give it a go but I am more interested in Squadron 42 which looks to be more up my singleplayer alley and what I would want from a "Wing Commander" for the 21st century.

I've got Elite and put a few hours in but it just didnt grab me for some reason, can't really put my digit on it.

geez just been looking through the SC packages and some of the prices are astronomical. Why would you pay $330 (£229) for a game ? Top package is $18000 (£12494) !

That's not the top package, those aren't listed. Why? Because some of the backers have a lot of money and want to see this made, same as many Oculus Rift backers paying insane amounts to see that get past Kickstarter.

You can get Star Citizen for as little as $30, just had to be paying attention at the time.

Dont really want SC just want Squadron 42 for Gillian Anderson ;)

What I dont get is people complain about DLC costing £15 or less when it should have been included in game etc etc blah blah yet people buying into Star Citizen seem to think its okay to pay $150 for one ship !?!?!

Technically you will be able to buy ships post release, either by purchasing another game package and gifting the ship to your account (eg they talked of ship + game packages post release) or by loading up 150 dollars worth of UEC and using that to buy a ship in game.

My mind might change when I download and try the free play but am I missing something huge here ? Its crazy. Dont get me wrong I grew up with Wing Commander in its CGA.EGA.VGA glory but this is just ridiculous ? $150 thats like buying a 750GTI GPU just to play one game ? To make matters worse from what I have just read someone can in game come along and nick your ship ? :) He He.

That's just it though, you don't NEED to pay more than the lowest price to get the game and earn everything in-game. As I've said to many people, there are those who are cash rich/time poor who just want to own a bigger ship, or in some cases pretty much all of them.

However having a more expensive ship doesn't mean you'll be "best". This is a skill based shooter, gear will only get you so far, the rest will come down to your personal skill and those of your friends if you're in a multi-crew ship or squadron. If in doubt, don't back it and wait for release. You'll only miss out on any backer rewards between now and release anyway and those are few and far between.

There are plenty of people who think some of us are mad for putting money into this, I think people who have 8 guitars are all nutters when they can only play one at a time but hey it's their decision! Only bringing that up as a mate was over last night and had a play at Star Citizen on my account, called me mad, wished he owned a PC then started talking about his guitar collection.

Regarding stealing ships - there is going to be locks etc on when the game is released but right now in the test universe it's a free for all, and pretty hilarious. Many people spawn ships for others to try though, personally I prefer to sneak on board and steal the ship whilst the owner is EVAing nearby. In the final game though there will be ship insurance, law enforcement, bounty hunting, piracy etc so whilst there will be people stealing/blowing up your ship it's more based on consequence/reward than anything else, it's not a game that'll hold your hand though and yes your ship could be stolen, locking it will likely only slow them down - much like real life.

If you want to see the sort of nonsense you can get up here is the very first attempt I and one of my friends from OCUK had at multi-crew, this was a few patches ago before a lot of stability work by devs :

Anything you buy above and beyond the base package is essentially donating to the game's development. It's no different than kickstarter donations and the ships are your reward.

Ahh okay now I understand. Be interesting to see if this grabs me more than Elite did. Now for that big download. :)

First major hiccup. The binding system doesn't work for my CH Hotas. After all, you wouldn't expect them to support one of the key players in the market...

There is a workaround that I've found, but it looks like a real pain to do. Maybe tomorrow.

I was wondering if there is anybody here who has a good understanding of how this game plays. I like the idea but there seems to be a lot going on with game development and I wouldn't know where to start.
I would like to somebody to write an in-depth article for my site and gain a little exposure.
Any one interested?

I'll probably play Squadron 42, SC will depend on how much I enjoy the single player aspect. But there's no way I'm going to give them thousands of pounds like some players.

Nobody is asking you to, literally nobody. That's the wonder of crowd funding.

I use a CH Pro throttle + Thrustmaster T16000M, no issues. You will have to bind axis etc first time through though and tweak in-game controller settings for axis deadzones etc.

Just don't start down the whole xml editing lark, there isn't any need.

I'll take a look thanks.

This title is something I should try and spend some time fathoming out.
I know it would make a great article.
You seem to know your stuff with this game. I reckon you could lay it out in an easy to understand manner.
You fancy writing an article for me?

How does this compare to Elite Dangerous? I found ED a let down, it felt so empty, aimless and repetitive. Does Star Citizen have a bit more life and soul to it?

Still in alpha Cern, if in doubt stay clear for now :) Still a long way to go in development terms bud.

It's a very different game to Elite to be fair, there's certainly space for both in the genre.

PaulC2K might be a safer bet to be fair mate he's usually more clued up on current goings on than I am, plus I'm away on holiday all next week :D

While its free no need to doubt just try it out.

Just had a bit of a blast and I like the feel of the ships much better then Elite.

^^ Very true especially since there's a days to download. It's not bad on mouse/keyboard in combat and at least you don't need to worry about transitioning to FPS

Can you use the rift in the alpha currently? looking at the website it's looking a lot further along than last time I looked at SC.

I look forward to anyone whose played ed on this. The flight model is awful compared to the smoothness in ed , like flying a tonka car. But then again SC has been designed to play with a mouse.

Not yet, head tracking did with but it's been pulled for now.

Utterly clueless, I played elite for about 150 hours, perhaps more. Put in easily three times that on star citizen, they have very different flight mechanics, I vastly prefer star citizens which is based on physics rather than arcade style.

That's not a dig at elite btw both games are excellent but different enough for me top enjoy both.
