£1k Auto for New Driver

Again personally I wouldn't be interested as the mileage is too low (whilst high mileage is normally believed to be a bad thing, low mileage can be as well, as things can go wrong due to not being used, or assumed to be ok due to low mileage but still deteriorate due to age e.g. rubber bushes, hoses etc - whereas a higher mileage car may have already had them refreshed due to wear and tear)

Lots of peculiarly placed scrapes and dents. Oddly-low mileage that probs means issues as Armageus mentioned.

Another focus £1495, but probably as good condition as you will get, long MOT, timing belt done. Still reasonably low miles at 61k, but not low enough to be worrying about.

Also think about expanding your such radius, from 15/20 miles - 40 or 50 miles isn't unreasonable (and even further if you have specific criteria).

lol. Bet it'd be cheaper to insure than most other options though :P

But more expensive when something goes wrong

Thanks, I've passed on the focus as that does look good for the money.

Buy a civic over a focus at the budget, they both have horrible auto boxes but the jap car is that bit less likely to have silly things go wrong - they typically stand up to abuse better than European cars at that kind of age

My sister took an Auto only for no other reason than she didn't like changing gear.

I don't think that's a good reason :p

Surprising how many people give up learning manual and take the easy way out with an auto only license. I saw having an auto only license as a reason to not give up lol

I got the other half a 2003 Mercedes C-Class auto for £1400. Not a car I was looking for but it was rust free, 90k and in great condition.

She needed a Auto for medical reasons and is well happy with it. To be honest it looks so smart compared to the other rubbish I saw around that price bracket.

At that price bracket I would go German or Japanese as they seem to have the best autoboxes. I would be careful of Ford or Mazda as many have the dreaded CD4E autobox (identified by the HOLD button on the gear shift). Just Google the law suits in the USA to see how bad it is. 60K is about all you can expect without expecting problems. These were popular in Focus and Mondeos as well as some Mazda's as they were forced to use Ford boxes.

It is still a minefield around this price bracket and I could still get my fingers burned.

While I'm sure you can, it will be a bottom of the market example vs that mk1 that is a decent example.

not all, just a little digging around will find a good one.

Only ones in budget within 50 miles of OP, and all fairly ropey, so I stand by my original statement.
