Why do we hate cycling in this country?

Dude, use your incredible intelligence to read the link at the top of your own link...

"rebuttal
When two people debate, one of them makes an argument, and the other follows with a rebuttal, which, plainly put, is the "no, you're wrong and this is why" argument.
We often associate rebuttals with arguments made in the courtroom or public debates that occur around election time, but the word can really apply to any situation in which an argument is put forth and someone disagrees, and explains why. Sports fans, for instance, like to argue about the likely winner of an upcoming game and when you make a case for why your friend is wrong, you are offering a rebuttal of his argument."

And that makes the use of the word "rebut" incorrect, how?

Rebut is a verb, the act. A rebuttal is a noun, as in the actual papers which are going to be presented during the act of a rebut which is rebutting.

The overarching drive of your point seems to be that you expect bikes to stay behind you even when it may be safe and legal for them to pass but don't like having to wait for it to be safe and legal for you to pass bikes.

Roads too narrow for you to get past the cyclist ? Not the cyclist's fault.

Too many hold ups (traffic lights, roundabouts, cars turning right, pedestrian crossings, etc.) allowing the cyclist to pass you repeatedly ? Not the cyclist's fault.

Short temper ? Not the cyclist's fault.

And that makes the use of the word rebut incorrect, how?

Eh? Are you for real? Read the post I quoted ffs. Rebuttal is not purely a legal term but is frequently used in a legal context.

However I would add that it shows your usage is incorrect because in proper English it is not "A rebut" as you put it but "A rebuttal".

I don't think we hate cycling in this country. We on the whole celebrate it for the enjoyable past time that it is. I'm sure getting your first bike is still a momentous occasion for your average 6 year old.

What cycling isn't is a viable way for the majority to get about in the 21st century.

It is a verb.

C'mon Tuppy, do you not know that the English language is obviously wrong and Asim is right?

You cannot be serious.

The fact that rebut is a verb is now the new reason it's incorrect usage? "Oh look at me I looked in a dictionary and saw rebut is a verb so asim must be wrong because I wasn't rebutting?"

Are you honestly trying to say you weren't rebutting anything?

Rebut is a verb, the act. A rebuttal is a noun, as in the actual papers and items which are going to be presented during the act of a rebut which is rebutting.

Oh classic. Asim is now actually arguing that the English language is in fact wrong!

Where am I doing that exactly? You're the one having comprehension issues for the 20th time.

How is the above me "arguing that the English language is wrong", that is serious comprehension issue dude. On the contrary, you're the one saying the English language is wrong. :D

I'm going to have to try end this soon, sorry but as much as I'd like for us both to be awesome at writing English, I don't have time for people who start whining about people's intelligence or how clever someone looks instead of the point.

I think we should just throw all bicycles and cars and motorcycles in the bin and use roller skates, that way we can look fabulous too.

I think this is a view too many people sadly share. With justification though.
I've been hit by cars twice. Each time their fault.

My granddad was a member of a cycle club back in the 40s and 50s and he would cycle daily from north herts into central london, i cant even imagine such a thing now. Not just because of the huge numbers of cars and trucks but because of the attitudes of most people on the roads.

Simpler times.

I get angry at cyclists sometimes but i get angry at other drivers sooo much more often.
