Good moments in films for testing audio equipment

They are a massive difference from TV speakers!

For me it is the space issue, and also what I can get past the wife. Something like 5.1 is definitely not happening as she doesn't want visible speakers everywhere. Will probably get a soundbase that the TV shows on as it is the most discreet option and doesn't require a sub.

I know they are a big difference from TV speakers, I was asking what's the difference between a couple of sound bars at £400 really going to be?

As for the other half not wanting speakers all over, personally I think you need to train her better. :p

well that's the difference between a £400 pair of beats by dre and sennheisers?

well quite a lot actually. one of them is naff the other perfect.

Why are you constantly trying to compare this to headphones? There isn't a beats equivalent brand in sound bars, it's LG, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Yamaha, and a few hi-fi brands at. the higher end.

For me it has to be Master and the Commander sounds amazing with the sound of cannon shot going over your head and the exposions of the ships been blow to bits.

I now use Mad Max to show off the speakers to guests, mainly because it kicks in right from the start. (it's also a nice intro and serves as a good cut off point when the title appears)

For testing in Richer Sounds I used Pacific Rim, in addition to my music.

The opening 10 minutes of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

The sound of normal life aboard ship into the Clear for Action and then the opening salvo from The Acheron is immense and covers a good range.

I'm going to go old school here - Apocalypse Now - when the Helicopters attack while playing Wagner. This has been a demo piece of film since Dolby digital made its debut on Laserdisc 20 odd years ago. The Transfer over to Blu-ray & DTS-HD is very good too.

George Lucas's THX sound effects are good for thrashing sound systems, there's loads on YouTube including the original "Deep Note":

Or you could try a Saturn V first stage test firing...
