New "fun" car time - looking for suggestions

The owner is pulling your leg buddy, an X on stock turbo cannot make 470BHP, that is new bigger turbo and uprated conrods to handle that level of power. The stock engine and stock turbo absolute maximum is 440BHP and at such power they have had the stock engine and turbo let go. I know I used to own one of these cars and did a lot of research when I owned mine and the most power I could make reliable was around 420 ish whilst maintaining stock power delivery.

I think the owner judging by his blacked out lights, BC coilovers and impossible 470BHP is either dreaming and never actually dyno the car on a accurate dyno so is just making up bigger numbers.

Judging by the modifications the owners has done it on a tight budget and I'd be really steering clear of that car and looking for a stock one or one with at least more tasteful modifications.

The EVO 5 your looking at seems to have being modified to much better taste with a lot more money thrown at it, Ohlins coilovers, now were talking those are the real deal that ride superb on both road and track, not just a one trick suspension but that is why they cost 2-3x more than a set of BC's.

My worry over the EVO 5 is it is clearly highly strung, hence engine rebuild and its only done 1000 miles so its not a particular well proven and reliable car unfortunately.

P.S. The SST gearbox cannot handle more than 360lb/ft without modification, this is why it was only available on FQ-300/330 models, 360 and above it was not an option. ;)

Right so as I told you its not running the standard turbo or the standard engine, different turbo and the correct parts of the engine upgraded to handle the power.

The list looks comprehensive and good, I am just in dis-belief why a person who spent so much money in tuning the car, those modifications are a good £6000-£10,000 in parts and labour as to why they then cheaped out by fitting cheap Chinese BC coilovers.

Buy it, put the suspension back to stock or get some Ohlins and lose the rear tinted lights and you have a lovely car.

Yes Ant at Indigo is a great guy, my advice if you buy is to call him tell him you now own the car and inform him of what your usage will be and if he advices the tune/map be altered at all.

I say this because some people tune cars on the limits and only use them as weekend cars doing just 1000-2000 miles per annum keep running cost down. Yes its complete stupidity to run a car near limits but a lot of people do especially with cars which only come out at Summer for weekend use who don't care if it breaks because most of the time its a garage queen.

I always aim when building a car for it to be reliable and still used as a daily, which is why I was rather annoyed with the whole BMW fiasco and 8500rpm, my own fault as I should have stood my ground further but in the end the result was not so bad and if anything my shells would have eventually failed anyway, would have just taken a few more thousand miles to present itself or another track day or two and consequences could have being much more severe as E46 M3 as does the E9x M3 does wear the shells even in stock tune and some have failed.

So if you buy it speak with Ant and make sure everything is fit for your usage and please no matter how good it might feel on the BC's get that JUNK out of that car!

Then...

If it's going to have warranty, then why worry about the cost of fixing a gearbox?

Simply put, I want a manual. End of.

I expect to own the car beyond the warranty that it comes with.

Manual most likely means lower running costs in the future, with lower purchase price at the start.

But even if those aspects were irrelevant, I'd still want the manual.

the car is being viewed by an Evo expert from MLR, either today or tomorrow (he lives close by) so i'll wait to see what he says......... i cant say no to him, he wants to view it anyway, but i hope he doesn't buy it :mad:

the car will be returned to standard trim, inc the suspension........ this to me is a way safer bet than the Evo 5.

it'll be quick enough that's for sure, because the standard X is already damned fast, but you only live once dont you. ;)

the deciding factor is the engine and gearbox are still under guarantee for the next 6 months, this is crucial.

the car will deffo go back to Indigo GT anyway, because the 1st thing to do is to get that engine serviced...i think the car lives at Indigo anyway because it's always there !

i dont know what made him fit those rubbish black tail lights....so Chavy

thanks for your help Gibbo, you're a good lad :D

You'll be doing 6 speed boxes in a evo weekly then :p

The 6 speeds are a bit comedy in Evo's with some tuners even refusing to rebuild them as A.) it's difficult and B.) it isn't worth the bother.

It's another case of cramming another gear into a transverse case rather than building a from-the-ground-up 6 speed for obvious cost reasons.

The 5 speed is fine (aside from being a bit grumpy when cold) and there are a number of people who offer cryo / peened services in the UK.

Obviously if you want to go full on dog box from the likes of Samsonas/Pfitzner/Drenth, then there's options should that tickle your fancy and should your pockets be deep enough.

A nice example, thought you wanted a manual though? The SST is meh until remapped to wake it up and as I said a few times, keep the torque down otherwise SST box, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Mal X.. with the greatest of respect.. stop posting Evos for you!

True should make your own thread instead of hijacking other peoples threads.....

We had quite a conversation at the last powerstation day about it. Me and my dad we're stood chatting to you with Kosta.

Anywho enough derailment for now.

I still think a JDM Blobeye or a the STI is where you'll feel happiest Kosta

Yeah I said anything above £15k would be requiring a warranty.

Anywho, finally managed to get the test drive of the Nismo 370Z booked for the same day as the Cayman. Should be fun :)

I'd be splitting my money, in fact I'm thinking of that myself.

I run a mk2.5 MX5 with a supercharger, 220bhp with a nice straight power curve, light and chuckable so you don't have to be doing license losing speeds to be having fun and it's convertible. I drove in this morning with ice still on the car but the morning sun meant is was a glorious drive to work.

That said it's not a car for all seasons and uses and so, because I can't give it up for the times it's the right choice, I'm looking for something to compliment it, preferably RWD with a grunty na engine and 4 seats.

Unless the OP wants to spend a fraction of his budget, I really don't think a turbo mx5 is on par with most of the other cars up for consideration here tbf. Not that i have anything against them (i own one currently) but you have to do a lot just to make it compete with these other cars in stock form.

That's why I'd be looking at 2 cars myself. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have choices like Gibbo, but my budget is almost exactly what the OP has.

So for me at that money you can get 2 very decent cars, not super car beating by any stretch, but 2 different options depending on my mood/need. But that's me, I'm just suggesting another option than the all or nothing on a decentish budget.

You also have to consider, I couldn't give a gnat's chuff about image or interior quality, if I won the lottery I'd buy a DC2, Golf Mk2 and other FWD cars as part of a stable of 2nd hand options that would range up to perhaps GTRs and Porsches. I doubt you'd find me in a brand new car. So my view is slightly off centre perhaps.

There is simply no point in 2 cars for me at this stage.

I have a Peugeot 407 HDi which more than does the job for me at the moment as a daily car.

But I don't disagree with the idea of what you're saying about spending less. It leaves me in a better position to modify, maintain etc. But the reality is that so many of the performance cars out there, that aren't nails, are priced waaaay too high for cars that are over 10 years old.

However, there are rare gems that appear from time to time and that is why I will be taking my time with finding a car that suits me best. The purpose of this thread is to seek ideas of cars so that I ensure I don't overlook anything that I may have not considered, and so far I've been very grateful for the suggestions :)
