New ford focus RS

I currently have the 5 pot engine..... Diesel, in my...... VOLVO V40 .... LOL... Who are/have replaying it also with a more advanced 4 pot.... In the V40 at least..... The drive for efficiency marches on... :(

This doesn't seem like a bad thing. I've never really understood how the 5 pot made any sense over a 4 pot. It wasn't noticeably more refined nor that much more powerful yet it was more thirsty.

Liking that grey but never been a fan of dark wheels. Also dont like the alloy style. :)

Looks a pain to clean so the dark colour is a bonus as it wont show the dust up as quickly.

Pity Ford will not do a decent auto box as with the DSG as they shift much faster and handle more power as the clutch is the weakest link in the Golf R manual.

I had a Volvo V40 hire car with the 2.0 5cyl diesel. It was just as rough and unrefined and made the same awful noise that every other 4cyl diesel does.

As for that drag race... Watch the video carefully. Every time he changes gear he has to lift off the accelerator, push the clutch pedal in, select a new gear with his hand, release the clutch pedal, and get back on the gas. Twin-clutch autos perform this procedure in a fraction of a second whilst at the same time you can keep your right foot firmly mashed into the carpet. You can see the other cars making another little surge forward when he changes gear.

This goes against the ethos of the car though. If you want a soulless characterless auto DSG box then get a Golf R or other marques. The Focus RS is all about the driving experience much like the Fiesta ST. Hence the drift button.

Look where the Clio failed, it was all down to the silly auto box.

Manual mode on DSG and PDK Sport Plus act in the same way. They both shift up automatically at the redline, when the pedal is fully pressed down.

If you want it to stay put in the gear, then the driver needs to press on the accelerator but avoid the kickdown button.

In sports PDK plus in manual mode the car will bang of the limiter in the manual mode it will not change up and if I remember correctly the kick down button on the bottom of the pedal is disabled in sports plus mode. But if I remember the kick down button needed some force to engage on the Porsche whereas on the VW's I've driven that kick down button is a lot easier to engage. But I remember the Porsche acting the same as the VW until I put it into sports plus mode on the console at which point the kick down was disabled and then it would bounce of limiter.

Whereas on DSG the car will upchange for you if you don't do it yourself.

PDK Sports plus I found better than the DSG, though I am sure it is all just software and the way the map is written to how the box behaves.

What would the difference be between them in a drag race if they disabled lAunch control and used dog in manual?

It would still lose.
The Focus RS was actually the first of the line as it had best launch but every gear change it lost ground.

It isn't an excuse. I was explaining to you why the Merc is a decent bit faster. It costs £10k more!
Most of the £10k cost difference is the premium badge (Mercedes and AMG) and the higher quality interior. The extra 30bhp also helps :)
If you compare the cost of the lowest spec A Class to the the lowest spec Focus (same engine size) there is around £10k cost difference but the speed is no different.

Almost makes black wheels acceptable. 7/10.

But the sound!

Just need to convince the wife to trade in her 4 year old st, that was easy she even likes that colour. Now if only we could justify the fact that it's double the cost of what she has already :(.

I have one of the last 5 pot 2.0ltr diesels in my V40 before they replaced it with the new 4 pot, it does have a nice thumm ... For a diesel.. Mega economical, smooth and with the Rica remap to 200PS pretty crisp and lively..... Excellent car.

Hi there

A rather promising review:
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2016-ford-focus-rs-test-review

Look beyond the interior and accept it for the car it is a hot hatch will great performance, fantastic grip levels and I can forsee owners being very happy.

But if I had 30k to spend on a b road warrior car with incredible all weather grip as good as the Focus RS is, I'd be buying an EVO X FQ-360 for around 20k and have a car that is well faster at pretty much everything with little to no depreciation. 10k saved and well my opinion is an EVO X is a better looking car with superior 4WD system and much rarer on the roads than a Focus.

But taking away from that the Focus RS looks a great car and if new car is important then at 30k with sub 5s 0-60, 4WD torque vectoring it has to be another great value proposition from Ford.

With Fiesta ST, Mustang and now Focus RS seems Ford have some great cars that are also selling very well. :)

Heel and toe is missed far too much in an auto...

True, but I think it's a thing of the past now in performance cars but still love seeing it on track from time to time.

With a modern dual-clutch box with software based rev matching you have far more control over the car by being able to overlap braking and throttle application whilst the software controls the rev matching. The linear acceleration throughout the gears is impressive.

Personally I find it more rewarding and fun than heel and toe'ing but that's probably because my feet were always too small to do it properly :D

I can only assume what Ford save on the interior is spent on making it faster, very hard to look past the dash (given what VW now offer).

Ford seem to have real trouble fitting the Focus and Fiesta with an interior you actually want to spend any time in, shame give the rest of the 'package' is good.

Hmmm I read the review on the Evo, don't think the RS will have much to worry about over an 8 year old Evo X... It will have it beat
Since we had synchromesh gearboxes heal and toe hasn't been needed.. It does its own pops and crackles on the over run anyway.
You can always left foot brake if on a rally stage lol

Ford could do any interior it wanted... If it spent a bit more at its suppliers.
