Government cash shouldn't be spent on trying to sway a referendum. 10 million quid is not exactly spare change either.

They did the same with the scottish referendum, so it's not that unusual.

And to be fair, 9 million quid is chump change nowadays, the govt budget would lose that amount just due to rounding, so to produce quite a glossy pamphlet and deliver it to 27 million households at 33p each, that's a bargain!

In fact knowing how private companies love to rip off the tax payer by overcharging on public contracts, I'm amazed it is so cheap! :D

Whether they should do it or not is another question.

Actually don't both sides get a leaflet funded by the electoral commission?

Not sure, I thought that each side was allocated a budget to spend one the official leave group was designated.

They're just leveling the playing field. Already had 3 crappy leaflets from Leave groups. You could say that's cheating if the official campaigns haven't started yet. :p

9mil is peanuts compared to what UK will lose if the vote is to leave so really they're saving us money. :) (Yes this will be temporary and should eventually bounce back but the initial reaction to result will be negative)

How much will the UK lose and why?

As Fox said the currency market reacts negatively to any uncertainity. Just Google what happened to pound when the referendum was confirmed. Even when Boris announced that he's on Leave side the value of the pound drop.
These are just reaction to possibility of leaving, if it happens the drops are very likely to be even bigger. How much and how long for I do not know.

So we should gain then, as a weaker currency generally boosts your own economy, results in more jobs etc.

Agreed. It's not a fair or reasonable use of taxpayers money.

petition here against these leaflets if anyone wants to sign it . 26k signatures so far.

Do people ever stop and think before rushing to the internets and posting/signing a petition!!! It's too late, it's happened.

You've got to love cast iron Dave, this referendum may be his greatest hits compilation. Following on from his homeopathic renegotiation which Michael Fallon described this morning as a "reformed Europe" I have every faith in our Prime Minister's promises.

I'm not inclined to trust the EU as an institution but compared to some members of our Government they often seem like a bastion of probity.
