Was quite an underwhelming episode as Sam and Gilly are two characters who aren't really that interesting, and they had almost half the episode.

I thought it was decent. Reintroduced some characters we haven't seen for a while (or you know, since the 3rd episode :p) and has hopefully moved some characters past some boring character arcs. The faceless men has to be one of the most disappointing plots in the series. Had so much potential as Jaqen was so cool in the earlier seasons.

The Sam/Gilly arc was all for the sword and I quite enjoyed seeing his home / roots.

Not so sure it was a filler episode as it moved quite a bit on albeit without much action. It feels like there are lot of plots/sub plots to fit into this season though but for once they are trying rather than leaving one or two to break for a whole season.

Other than Benjen and the dragon this was a bit of a filler episode.:(

Was that a new Edmure?

nah same actor I think, just looked a bit shabby as he's now a prisoner

I think the fast WW are the skinless skeletal types i guess cos they can move quicker with no flesh. Still pretty weak considering.

they're not white walkers they're 'wights'

white walkers are the guys controlling them

Yeah I think his idea is to have his fathers army go after him for the sword so that they see the Whitewalkers first hand.

he's still heading to the Citadel isn't he?

next episode preview(youtube clip in spoiler tags):
looks like we're still catching up with bits of the books(book reference)
siege in the Riverlands with Jamie + Freys vs the Blackfish that Pod and Brienne are presumably going to end up in the middle of too

Jon and Sansa seem to be gathering support in the north - looking at the two sigils it is House Glover + Mormount's house on Bear Island... presumably his sister

Ironborn siblings seem to have made it to Volantis (ref: the bridge)

Was surprised by the High Smugness move! :D

Also interesting to see Jaime doing the king slaying he's known for.

Still looking forward to the "I choose violence" bit we saw in the original trailer.

That wouldn't make any sense, he left the wall to go to the citadel, why would he abandon that straight away?

Sam going to the citadel has always been a bit strange, as it takes years to become a maester, and both he and Jon know that the danger is coming much sooner than that. I doubt he'll go the citadel now.

they've got the biggest library in Westeros and he wants to find out more about these White Walkers... maybe he'll go to the Citadel but then leave if/when the White Walkers breach the wall or bypass it somehow and start invading Westeros

that sword will presumably play a role in helping to kill them too

well true but unless bran decides to appear to him as a ghost or freak him out in a dream or something he's surely going to carry on towards the Citadel

Jaqen was so cool in the earlier seasons

I do wonder how someone like Jaqen wound up in a cage with some petty criminals. He's a bit of a **** now. Arya saved his bacon and now he signs her death warrant. Suppose he did forefill his end of the bargain though.

Thought it was quite a good episode. Sam's family reunion was excellent, ironically, best 'bit' of the episode. Randyll Tarly was an excellent cast. I suspect we'll be seeing more of him.

Daenerys is so boring. Do something already.

Fan theory things
One theory I read is the waif or Jaqen is Syrio from the first season or vice versa.

I doubt the waif is, she seems to actually hate Arya... Jaqen is possible... though I don't think so in the TV series - maybe in the books

I thought it was an enjoyable episode even though it was quiet by Game of Thrones standards.

The only bit of a letdown was the showdown between the Sparrow and Jamie/Tyrell Soldiers. I wanted blood :(

It seems that Cersei's trial will still happen, so maybe Cleganebowl is still on course :D

I've read that theory but I dont believe it. Its a question of mentality, Syrio and Jaqen are extremely different people at essence. Syrio was all about the honour of the fight and the nobility of man to man combat. Jaqen is about using "underhand" methods to kill , preferably without even being face to face with your opponent. It really wouldnt make sense for them to be one and the same
