BBC Top Gear - Series 23 discussion thread

I enjoyed that episode. Even didn't mind the rallycross car bit for a change.

They can't manufacture the rapport that Clarkson, May and Hammond built up in a few episodes though. Perhaps that will come with time - although on the other hand, they say "3's a crowd". Well how about 6?

The celebrity section is by far the worst bit. Evans is the worst presenter, followed by Jordan and Sabine imo.

I loved Harris' film, and enjoyed Reid's film too.

The race just seemed like filler, I agree that when the old bunch did the races it was the chemistry which made it entertaining. Evans, Sabine and Le Blanc just don't have it unfortunately. I know that the others had years to perfect it, but Evans is just too much :(

I'll continue to watch as the Harris segments have been brilliant so far, and Reid's bits are worth watching too.

I just watch it an hour after it's aired so I can forward wind the celebrity section :p

Just an (admittedly slightly sexist) observation - crowd management.

Clearly the old production team had someone in the production team "talent spotting". Said 'talent' would be parked immediately behind the presenters during studio segments.

None of that here.

I can take or leave Evans, but Jordan just seems pointless, with sabine not far behind, the show does not need that many presenters anyway.

Best Stig intro for a long time I think:
"Some say, he thinks Brexit is a laxative... and that for tax purposes it's classed as a biscuit"

To be honest I watched a 2014 one on Dave today - where they were in 80's hatchbacks and did that awful police chase at the end. Tonight's show was better than that, and I'm a big Clarkson fan.

I haven't seen the new Top Gear yet, I really detest Chris Evans and am afraid that he might ruin Top Gear for me. But, as I was reading through this thread I thought about the first few seasons of the old Top Gear.

I went back and watched the first ever season again and am currently watching the second season. You can see why Top Gear became so popular, it was good from the start. The only bad point was Jason Dawes, he didn't really suit the show at all. James May arriving in the second season was the final link in the chain. The show went from been really good to must watch TV.

People in this thread are saying that it will take time for the new Top Gear presenters to get to know each other, to build up the jokes etc. But it wasn't like that for the original Top Gear. For whatever reason May, Hammond and Clarkson clicked right from the start. It just worked.

They seem to be 'getting there' compared to the awful start of this season.
But the same issues still arise.
Studio segments (SIARPC and also the 'banter') are still god awful.
And the main film keeps forgetting to actually be about the vehicles.

Harris and Reid making films that are specifically about the cars are certainly very enjoyable tho. The best bit of the last 2 shows.
And yeah, MLB continues to be pleasantly likeable in the films.

Not sure whether I actually like Sabine's presenting or if I'm just entertained by the crazy ass excitable milfness she exudes. I need to investigate further :)

The whole rallycross section is ****. Even with decent guests its just awkward and barely interesting.

If I had to pick three presenters and be rid of the rest, it would be Le Blanc, Harris and Reid.

Would be the best setup. Would make it more of a car show, with RR in the sensible, down to earth May role, LeBlanc doing the shouty Clarkson parts and Harris to do the rest.

The rally cross bit is rubbish, the trips aren't great at the minute although I feel they may improve once the presenters have spent some more time together but in general I'm definitely warming to the new show as they seem to be including less CE and more Harris and Reid who are interesting to watch.

EJ should just **** off though he's like watching a wet dish cloth, Evans is irritating but at least there's a little something about him.

It's fine if they don't have the chemistry but it's just so forced, like the Leguna Seca bit with Evans and Sabine laying head to head on the pit wall. What the fudge is that about?

Unlucky for TG but there's loads of car based shows around on TV and the internet, couple that with an unpopular presenter line up and it was always going to be a disaster.
