The next Labour leader thread

We can't have another established mp as leader they all tend to have mostly the same views and won't win votes back. We need someone we can relate to. Corbyn had somethings going for him like he was not a huge claimant of expenses like almost every other mp is.

But I really think we need someone who sees our problems and offers us reasonable solutions for fixing them.

The best thing Corbyn can do is get in like-minded replacements, ever since the coalition the Labour party have done nothing but support the Conservatives in pushing through cruel policies until Corbyn came in, let all of the deserters trying to overthrow him join the Tories where they belong and next election we'll have two main parties with different policies.

Labour win when they win the middle-class. With a socialist that is never going to happen.

Keep saying it until people start to believe it's true?

Labour is a party standing on a crumbling foundation. The working classes are abandoning them as they realise the party no longer reflects (or even acknowledges) their views. Scotland has abandoned them because they've become too London-centric. Their vote is slowly being eroded by other parties and voter apathy. This all started back around the turn of the century as the shine started to come off Blair. And it's becoming a real problem now.

Blair successfully built on Labour's core vote among the poor, the working class, the Scots and the Welsh. He appealed to the middle classes and won them over. But if the vote is crumbling elsewhere, splitting the middle class vote with the Tories isn't going to work. I'm certain Blair couldn't replicate his victories with the Labour Party in its current state.

With the current climate who knows how far right or left the country will vote for.
The next General Election will likely be the most interesting in my lifetime.

I'd vote Labour if Corbyn stays but not likely if they oust him. I will not vote Tory so probably not vote at all. The media is against JC because he is a threat to the rich and powerful yet we have many on here against him and supporting the party for the rich status quo.

You are witnessing a monumental tactical error by the PLP.

If Corbyn is on any future ballot he will win, thus the people who want him out have just secured his future.

They've also given Corbyn the perfect ammunition to push for deselections, and with the prospect of an early general election... if this is their level of political tact then we should be damn glad they're not in charge.

It is the CLP's that select candidates, not Corbyn or the PLP.

Yes, but if candidates get deselected then Corbyn can pretty much rely on his widespread support among the membership to appoint more sympathetic candidates. I doubt it would be Corbyn himself would be seen to push for this, but it's quite clear that these are MPs who are unwilling to serve the party with him at the helm.

No he can't.

CLP's choose a candidate.

Have only just started following this and am surprised at this forum seemingly being behind Corbyn. The media has done a very good job of demonizing him despite his election being summoned upon the Labour parties largest surge in membership.

That odious wretch and proven liar Laura Koennsberg certainly didn't help either.

There are as others can clearly see too many MPs who are just in it for themselves; Blairites and prodigies of self sustenance. Hilary Benn's father would be appalled, the apple has fallen very far from the tree indeed.

This is the beginning of the end of the Labour party. Safe to say after this referendum that they are no longer the party of the people.

Labour need Blairites in at the top to be electable. It's all very well the Labour Party saying Corbyn has a 60% mandate but that mandate is from Labour supporters and £3 text voters. To win Labour need to be in the centre ground.

Falconer has gone!

If you include Benn that's 1/3 of the shadow cabinet gone today.

Tom Watson statement

I was deeply disappointed to see Hilary Benn sacked in the early hours of this morning and equally saddened that so many talented, able and hard-working colleagues felt they had to leave the shadow cabinet. My single focus is to hold the Labour party together in very turbulent times. The nation needs an effective opposition, particularly as the current leadership of the country is so lamentable. It’s very clear to me that we are heading for an early general election and the Labour party must be ready to form a government. There’s much work to do. I will be meeting Jeremy Corbyn tomorrow morning to discuss the way forward.

He chose people who would conform with his ways.

Personally, I never understood how or why Hilary Benn and Heidi Alexander were selected since they had different views to Corbyn on quite a large number of issues. If anything, those two were the ones adding credibility to Labour and now they are gone.

Probably for the same reason Blair kept Presscott around.
